Remember during the run up to the election last year President Obama offered us change. Well he has delivered in my opinion. One little example is the viewing of the returning men and women coming home for the last time from war in their flag draped caskets. Now it's up to the families to say if the media can take pictures of this event. That's a change that I've wanted for a long, long time. * - - - - - * Yesterday I talked about this Sony DVDirect system that I have and only started using yesterday. Well for much of the day I spent time converting some of my VHS tapes to DVD's. What's neat is that I'm looking at video long forgotten. For example there are clips of my mom and dad, my brothers and sisters many years ago. Pictures of my kids, nieces and nephews from years past. It's fun going through these tapes. I have a bunch more to go through. * - - - - - * FONT COLOR="black">HOUSE OF CARDS 13 and 14 of 24

Sometime's I forget just how smart I am. A year or so ago I bought a system called DVDIRECT by Sony. This system transfers home movies and digital pictures to DVD quickly and easily, without a PC. Connects with virtually any camcorder, VCR, DVR or digital camera.
Well in my pledge to clean out all the stuff I no longer need or use I came across some old video tape (VHS) that I have but haven't looked at in years. I've got video from back in 2000 on the implosion of the Kingdome in Seattle, Jim and Amy's wedding, Channy and Larry's wedding, Sweet and Buddy playing in the backyard. I even have a tape from Frontline PBS series on ENRON.
I never used this system until yesterday and man is it slick. You load the tape in the VCR recorder put a DVD in the DVDirect and push start on each machine. That's it.
I've converted 5 tapes to DVD so far and I'm working on Jim and Amy's wedding right now.
There is one additional benefit and that is I saw my brother Buz on the tape and that gave me a nice warm feeling. I didn't see Jim but I'm sure he is on there too, I'll check closer when I review on my computer a little later today. I miss them both.

Did you watch the speech last night? I can only say that President Obama makes me so proud and confident that he will put this country back on the tracks. * - - - - - * I mentioned that I did my own Taxes using TurboTax and then using the e-File option. One of the things I learned was that although I had given a lot of furniture and other house hold items to charity it wasn't A REAL CHARITY like GOODWILL and such. This was a guy from Poulsbo that was trying to help the flood victims down south of Olympia. I didn't think I could claim any of the value and if I did I might get challenged so I didn't claim any of it. This year my goal is to clean out my house of all the stuff I don't use or need anymore. For example old 5-1/4 inch floppy disks, small appliances, vhs recorders, and so on. I'm cataloging and taking pictures of everything that I will be giving to St Vincent de Paul. I will put a value for each item and use this when I do my Taxes next year. Hope all this effort keeps me out of jail. * - - - - - *HOUSE OF CARDS 9 and 10 of 24

Gov. Bobby Jindal's task tonight, to rebut President Obama's first address to a joint session of Congress, was a thankless one. But it still constituted an opportunity for the Louisiana Republican to show that he could handle the national spotlight, present himself as a fresh face of the Republican Party, and stand up to the current president oratorically.
On each of these three hurdles, he came up short. Both Democrats and Republicans alike panned Jindal's rebuttal in terms that were decidedly harsh: "amateurish," "laughable" and, most commonly, "a missed opportunity." "After watching Jindal," one Democratic strategist emailed, "I'd pay a lot of money to be back watching a Palin speech." "Awkward with capital A," emailed another.STILL BUSHED

Well I learned something yesterday and it reminds me that I DO need to read the manual. For the last few days I've been talking about my riding lawnmower and the fact that as I mowed my lawn last week I ran over an old rusty dog chain. Needless to say that chain stopped me dead. That bad boy wasn't going to mow another blade of grass. Try as I might I couldn't move the mower. I thought the chain had somehow wrapped itself around the drive train and so I was stuck. Shon and I tried to lift the thing but it was more than we could handle. So I called Sears and made an appointment to have the mover services and remove the chain at the same time. The service man called me yesterday about 30 minutes before he got here. Since it was raining pretty hard he asked He asked me if there was some place under cover. I told him my garage was available but my mower was in my back yard under a plastic tarp. And I couldn't move it. He told me that by disengaging the blades I should be able to start it and drive it to the garage. I said ok I'd give it a shot. Sure enough it started right up and so I moved it into my garage. The repair man came removed the chain, performed the annual service, replaced the oil filter, drive belt and charged me $250.00. Now it'll rain for the next 100 days. * - - - - - * Click on the image for a larger view.
The Cullman Times reports that Alabama Sen. Richard Shelby, in a meeting with constituents, appeared to give some thought to rumors questioning President Obama's citizenship.
Another local resident asked Shelby if there was any truth to a rumor that appeared during the presidential campaign concerning Obama's U.S. citizenship, or lack thereof.
"Well his father was Kenyan and they said he was born in Hawaii, but I haven't seen any birth certificate," Shelby said. "You have to be born in America to be president." According to the Associated Press, state officials in Hawaii checked health department records during the campaign and determined there was no doubt Obama was born in Hawaii.

DOCTOR'S ORDERS?
Republicans claim that the new stimulus law says the government will tell physicians what procedures can and can't be performed. It doesn't. Republican politicians have claimed that the stimulus bill requires that doctors follow government orders on what medical treatments can and can't be prescribed. But the bill doesn't say that.
Rep. Tom Price of Georgia says the measure creates "a national health care rationing board." Not true. What it creates is a council to coordinate research into which treatments work best, and are most effective for the money. And in fact, the new law states quite specifically that the council has no power to "mandate coverage" and that its recommendations are not to be construed as "clinical guidelines for ... treatment." Betsy McCaughey, a Republican former lieutenant governor of New York, claims that the bill creates a "new bureaucracy, the National Coordinator of Health Information Technology." Not true. The office was created in 2004 by President Bush. McCaughey also says the office "will monitor treatments" and " 'guide' your doctor's decisions." But that's nothing new. Bush's initiative called for creating a health IT system to transmit information to "guide medical decisions." Critics of comparative effectiveness research, which the government has been funding for decades, claim that it will lead to treatment being approved or denied based on costs. Proponents say it will improve the quality of care and can, in some cases, show that more costly treatments aren't as effective as less expensive alternatives. We can't predict what will happen in the future, but we can say that several claims being made about the impact of the bill are simply opinions being passed off as facts.STILL BUSHED

This is a picture that I took about 10 minutes ago. It's still dark here.
Man it was nice outside yesterday so I decided it was time I mowed my backyard. The other day as the boys were cutting back the black berry bush they found an old rusty dog chain. I looked for it before I started to mow the lawn but didn't see it so I thought that they had dumped in the bin with the clipping's.
Turns out they didn't. I ran over the thing and it caused my riding mower to stop dead. I couldn't lift the tractor to remove it so it sits in my backyard waiting for help.

There are a couple of items I want to point out in today's post. First I hope you are watching the CNBC HOUSE OF CARDS. It traces the reason behind the meltdown in the housing market and Wall Street. This is a MUST SEE program if you want to understand what happened and how we go here.
The second item is the one on Paying Down your mortgage. If your like me each year at the start of the year you get these offers from various companies for a fee they will show you how to save big bucks on you hose mortgage. The fact is you can do this yourself without having to spend an money.
The last item is the CNBC guy going off the deep end about Obama trying to help people that are about to be foreclosed. I think he's dead wrong and I don't recall him saying anything about the bank bailout.

TEMPTED BY MORTGAGE ACCELERATION PROGRAM? NOT SO FAST
By: John Ulzheimer
Despite the fact that homeowners are having a hard time paying their mortgages and, even worse, understanding the basic terms of their home loans, mortgage lenders and some other creative “cash flow management” companies are still pushing the need for accelerating your mortgage payments. Personal finance and tax experts often criticize the strategy as being a poor use of your money. Here’s why: 1. You’re “de-liquefying” your cash – When you spend more money paying down your home loan you convert liquid assets into non-liquid assets. This is problematic especially if you believe the stock market will eventually recover. The more money you throw at your loan the less you have to invest in the market. This is problematic given that many experts predict the market will eventually rebound at a rate that easily outpaces the rate of your home’s appreciation during any sort of real estate recovery. If you have extra money that you don’t know what to do with, save it for your “rainy day” fund and keep it in an interest-yielding account such as a money market account or short-term certificate of deposit. 2. You actually might want and need mortgage debt – Of all of the debts that we, as individuals, incur there are so few that offer as nice of a tax break as your mortgage interest. In most cases every dollar of interest you pay on your mortgage loan, which is usually substantial, is completely tax deductible. This is especially nice in the early years of your loan when the distribution of your monthly payment is heavily tilted toward interest. For example, I have a home loan, 30-yr fixed at 6%, and every month I pay $1,446. Out of that amount all but $230 goes right into the lender’s pocket as interest. And I write off every cent of that at the end of the year. 3. It’s cheap money – Unless you have poor credit the odds are you’re paying an interest rate less than 7% on your mortgage loan and around 3.5% on your home equity line of credit. This makes for very inexpensive credit so it doesn’t really make sense to throw money at those accounts. Paying down credit card debt at 19.99% is a much better use of your cash. 4. You can do it yourself, for free – Mortgage lenders position these programs as if they’re doing you a favor by letting you pay back your loans faster. And, even worse, some third party companies actually want to charge you to facilitate the process of making more frequent payments. The most popular is the weekly payment taken directly out of your checking account. These services are nothing more than a lender getting paid more frequently, and on their timetable. This is great for their cash flow and poor for yours. If you insist of paying more than you have to each month then look at your mortgage statement. Do you see that section called “Additional Principal?” That’s where you can add in some amount of extra money each month and direct the lender to apply it to your principal loan amount, for free. 5. Your money is better spent elsewhere – If you really want to make better use of your extra money each month then you should throw it at your credit card debt. The interest rate is probably much higher than your mortgage interest rate, it’s not tax deductible and is damaging your credit scores much more than your mortgage ever will.CNBC RANT

I hope your watching the House Of Cards video from CNBC it sure tells the story of these sub-prime loans and how we got into this mess. Remember I'm showing two videos a day, sometimes one of the videos will be very short that is because I've taken the commercials out of them. * - - - - - * I don't know what it is but something happened on my wireless network a week or two ago. It knocked me off the air for a few days. I ended you buying a new wifi-router. And now I'm backup and running and life is good. Or so it would seem. I replaced my old Windows XP system that I've had for the past 5-6 years. It was working just fine (until the problem of the past couple of weeks). But one day last week I decided to boot it up and check of some old pictures. I turned the system on and it went into this loop of giving me an error message (which only Microsoft knows what it means), it then did a total system dump and tried to boot again but failed and gave me that same message and repeated the total system dump. I let it go through this crap a few times and finally turned the system off. I did try it again a few hours later with the same result so I guess I got all the data off this system that I'm going to get. Now it off to the recycle bin. Was that the end of my tail of "WHOE IS ME"? Well no I had another system that started doing the same thing. At first it couldn't find the monitor that was connected to it. A monitor that has been working for the last couple of years. Go figure. Then this guy started doing the same LOOP de LOOP as my old XP. I fooled with it for a little while but decided it's history and so now I have two old system ready for the recycle bin. I hate computers. . . * - - - - - * Speaking of computers none of my HP system (I have 3) have a parallel port so I can't use my HP Laser Jet P6 printer now. It wasn't a problem before because it was always attached to my old XP system I'm going to look around to see if there is a parallel to USB adapter so that I'll be able to use it. HOUSE OF CARDS 1 of 24
I've broken this two hour show down into 24 bite size shows that I'll post over the next two weeks. I'll post two a day so we can get through the full two hours in about two weeks instead of a month.
Here is a little overview. Collapse - "Let's hope we are all wealthy and retired by the time this house of cards falters." THE HOUSE OF CARDS CNBC presents the definitive report on the defining story of our time. CNBC correspondent David Faber investigates the origins of the global economic crisis, with first person accounts from home buyers, mortgage brokers, investment bankers and investors - most of whom let greed blind them, leading to the greatest financial collapse since the Great Depression. INSIDE AMERICA'S SUB-PRIME MORTGAGE CRISIS Cynthia Simons The Buyers Cynthia Simons craved a better life for her family and wanted to leave the crime-ridden area of Compton, Ca. She thought her prayers were answered by a mortgage broker from her church who found the family a house in a safe neighborhood. Lou Pacifica The Lenders Lou Pacific worked for Quick Loan Funding. The company targeted people who couldn't afford a down payment and had poor credit…so-called "sub-prime borrowers." With no shortage of eager borrowers, business was booming and Quick Loan made millions of dollars. Kyle Bass The Investors In a rare interview, CNBC's David Faber speaks with one of the few savvy investors who bet against the mortgage-backed security fever - Dallas's Kyle Bass - whose hedge fund soared 600% in just eighteen months. Alan Greenspan The Federal Reserve Former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan defends decisions he made that critics say laid the groundwork for the crisis. Greenspan also admits that he was puzzled by the more complex mortgage-backed securities on the market. * ** *
WE NEED TO SEE THIS AS IT HAPPENS
Every week, Air Force cargo jets land and taxi down the runway at Dover Air Force Base, Del., carrying the remains of fallen U.S. troops. After a chaplain says a simple prayer, an eight-man military honor guard removes the metal "transfer cases" from the planes and carries them to a mortuary van.
The flag-draped coffins are a testament to the toll of the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as to the sacrifice borne by those who serve in the military and their families. But this ceremony, known as the "dignified transfer of remains" and performed nearly 5,000 times since the start of the wars, is hidden from the American public view by the Pentagon. President Obama said last week that he is considering lifting the ban on photographs and videos at Dover, in place since the Persian Gulf War in 1991, raising fundamental questions about the impact of such images on the public morale in wartime. I have always felt the real reason they didn't want photos taken was because it reminds us all of the real cost of war. Kind of an out of sight. . . out of mind deal.SMARTER THEN HER MOM

Yesterday I finished my 2008 TAXES. I used TuirboTax and it really is a great program. It's pretty had to screw it up unless you give it bad data. I took it slow and easy and think I spent about 5-6 hours from start to finish. I have to pay $25 ,bucks, but that's better than the last couple of years here I paid $600 or more. Last year I got smart and increased my tax deduction by $100 bucks a month. Next year should be easier because TurboTax will import the data from this years return. We'll see. * - - - - - * I had my two boys here this past Saturday. They did some moving of equipment in the house but the main goal was to cut down the blackberry bushes in my yard. They made a big dent in it and will be back today to hopefully finish it off. I'm going to post some pictures and hope to find one that shows the bush before they started. * - - - - - *
I have a calendar program that tracks my appointments and birthdays and other important information.
The image shows the red blocks as doctor appointments and the orange as therapy. Looks like that's all I do in February is go to the doctor or therpy.

With the economy in a downward spiral, more and more people are taking advantage of credit card offers to make ends meet, but are the credit card companies actually taking advantage of their customers?
In the week in which federal regulators adopted sweeping new rules for the credit card industry, NOW meets families struggling to pay off their credit card debt. Such debt has become significantly larger thanks to questionable industry practices like doubling and tripling interest rates, increasing fees and penalties, and shrinking credit limits. We meet people like Andrew Spurlock and his wife Michelle, who are raising three children while watching the interest rates and fees on their credit cards skyrocket. Michelle was horrified when her interest rate jumped from seven percent to 30 percent from one day to the next, despite claiming she always paid her monthly minimum. Michelle and her husband are fighting off financial ruin as they struggle to pay off their debt. Harvard Professor Elizabeth Warren, an expert on debt and the middle class, says credit card companies are deceiving customers in order to maximize profits. "You would think that if you upheld your end of the contract that the contract would be binding. But in the case of credit cards, you would be wrong," Warren, tells NOW. This week, NOW takes a hard look at the small print in credit card offers, and at Congressional legislation aimed at regulating the industry. Are you getting the credit you deserve? * *STILL BUSHED

What the heck is going on here. My Wireless Network and Internet connection has been down since Sunday. I don't have a clue as to what went wrong. Normally when I can't get my e-mail it's one of two things, Comcast is off line for maintenance or I need to reboot my Cable Modem and Router (the later is the normal solution). I did the reboot and still I couldn't make contact with my network. I tried this several times. I even called Comcast to see if they could help me. They did a reset from their end and it didn't work. I decided the problem was about three pay grades above me and so I called the GEEK SQUAD and got on their schedule. The bad thing is she said it wouldn't be until Wednesday 2/11. Yesterday I decided to try it again to see if I could get my Network up and running. I turned on my computers, turned on my cable modem, but when I turned on the router NO lights came on not even the power light. I decided that the problem was indeed in my router and when to Office Depot and bought a replacement. ($69.00). Came home and started to install it and ran into problems right off the bat so I decided to call Linksys for help. I got a gal in the Philippines. We spent a great deal of time due to language differences and my bad hearing. Anyway we got it up and running and the world is all good again. Speaking of Tech Support I had an issue with my Norton Anti virus software and needed to talk to Their Tech Support group. Guess where that is? INDIA. Nothing is done in America anymore I guess. * - - - - - * Well I'm just about finished with my Taxes. I'm using TurboTax with e-File. I got the last bit of info I needed yesterday so I'll finish up today or tomorrow. I must say that for the most part the TurboTax program does an excellent job of walking you through the process. The bad news is I still have to pay $25.00. I thought that the $1700.00 I contributed to the following campaigns would get me a refund but I found out I can't deduct contributions to political campaigns. * - - - - - * I need to get my two boys over here to do some work. They can do the lifting that I can't and my garage is so damn messy. (Note to self, take some pictures). * - - - - - *STEWART TAKES ON BILL-O

Ooh, it’s getting nasty now between President Obama and Rush Limbaugh. In fact, Limbaugh told his radio audience he’s not going to “bend over” and grab his ankles just because Barack Obama is black. Well, you know, let’s take race out of it for a minute. Now, honestly, regardless of who’s president, do you think there’s any chance in hell Rush Limbaugh could bend over and grab his ankles? - Jay Leno

Lot's to do today. At 8:30 I have a gal coming in to take all my mini-blinds from the windows to be cleaned.
At 10:00 I go to physical therapy. I'm thinking I need to put it on hold until I talk to my Dr today.
12:20 go to Dr Dore to see what's going on with my feet. This started Sunday afternoon when I started to feel something like electric shocks in both of my feet, but mostly my left foot. I didn't sleep at all that night.
The next day (Monday) I called my Dr to see if I could get in but he was booked until Wednesday (today). He said to get some Tylenol to help control the pain. That helped a bit but I still had the shocks but not as sever.
Tuesday I decided to wear shorts cause my jeans rubbed the ankle area an irritated the skin. I also wore my slippers all day because my feet had swollen. Lastly I rubbed skin lotion on both my legs and that also helped.
So now it's Wednesday and I go see my Dr.

I started doing my TAXES last week using Turbo Tax. I haven't done my own taxes in over 10 years because of my small business. I've since retired and closed it down and so I'm going to save a little money and do my own Taxes and use the e-File option.
Wonder if I can still do my Blog in Federal prison.

I saw this on PBS- NOW just before I went in for Hip Replacement. I'm breaking it up into 5 parts and putting them all right here in this post rather than over the next five days. Well it's been almost a month since I went in for HIP Surgery. Not much has happened since I've been gone I guess, so I'll just pick up where I left off. Actually I think I'll post just a few times each week for the next 3-4 weeks, kind of work myself back into the grove. My HIP Surgery went well, but with me it's the after shock that gets me down. It happened BIG TIME when I had open heart surgery a couple of years ago. I was supposed to be in Harrison at that time for about 6-7 days but instead I was there for over 20 days. This time it wasn't that bad I got out in about 6-7 days which is close to normal. When I said "got out" I really mean went to a rehab center. I don't like those places. You share a room and one TV. If you don't like what your roommate is watching your out of luck. It's a first come first served operation. I don't know about you but a week after surgery the last thing I want to do is eat. Here they want you eating 3 times a day. I just picked at the food I couldn't help it I wasn't hungry. The bright spot for me was Jan 20th. I was able to watch the Inauguration including the Presidents speech. I had developed a cough while at the rehab center and on Jan 23rd I had an appointment with my Dr. about my cough. I had learned that I was going home on Saturday the 24th. So they put me in a wheel chair and off we went to see my Dr. When I got there the nurse weigh me and did the routine test like pulse and blood pressure. She asked me if I felt ok. I said just fine. She told me my blood pressure was low. When my Dr came in he found the same thing and then said he was putting me in Harrison so that they can monitor me over the weekend. Man I was looking forward to going home the next day. So I spent three days in Harrison before going home. One nice thing the beds at Harrison are a lot more comfortable. More to follow. . . * - - - - - *DOGS RULE - YOU CAN SEE THE LOVE
