HAPPY HALLOWEEN

The White House is working to enact a wide array of federal regulations, many of which would weaken government rules aimed at protecting consumers and the environment, before President Bush leaves office in January.
The new rules would be among the most controversial deregulatory steps of the Bush era and could be difficult for his successor to undo. Some would ease or lift constraints on private industry, including power plants, mines and farms.
Those and other regulations would help clear obstacles to some commercial ocean-fishing activities, ease controls on emissions of pollutants that contribute to global warming, relax drinking-water standards and lift a key restriction on mountaintop coal mining.
Once such rules take effect, they typically can be undone only through a laborious new regulatory proceeding, including lengthy periods of public comment, drafting and mandated reanalysis.

This week on the JOURNAL, Bill Moyers spoke with economist James K. Galbraith about the causes of the economic crisis and how the U.S. might best move forward.
Galbraith advocated expanding government regulation of the economy: "Here in the United States the capacity to handle the crisis exists. What we need is a government that's willing to use that capacity, that believes in it... Regulation is not a burden on business. Robin Holland Johnson traveled around the globe and recorded tracks for such classics as "Stand By Me" and Bob Marley's "One World" — creating a new mix in which essentially the performers are all performing together — worlds apart. According to a government study, by the year 2020, there could be a nationwide shortage of up to one million nurses, which could result in substandard treatment for hundreds of thousands of patients. Just as alarming, fewer nurses are choosing to teach the next generation of professionals, resulting in tens of thousands of applicants being turned away from the nation's nursing schools.
"If there was ever a time in the history of this country when one thought about the match between a profession and the changing needs of people in the country, this is the time," Dr. Mary Naylor of the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing tells NOW on PBS. Dr. Naylor points out the growing population of older people, many of whom are living with chronic conditions, is significantly increasing the demand for nurses. LETTERMAN HAS A TALK WITH JOHN MCCAIN PART 5 OF 5
It's OK When Republicans Pal Around With CONVICTED Terrorists but the democrats not so much.
Assigned to demonize the opponent, Palin works the campaign trail as a politician with mud in her hands and a gift for slinging it. Palling around with GOP dirty tricksters, she slanders McCain's opponent, a sitting U.S. senator, as a fellow-traveler of "terrorists who would target their own country." Her "terrorists" is a lone and long-since reformed William Ayers, who, when Barack Obama was a youngster growing up abroad, helped found a radical anti-Vietnam war group blamed for several domestic bombings in the '60s. Pressed about Palin's exaggerations of Obama's relationship with Ayers - both men deny they've ever been pals - Sen. McCain supported her. However, when Letterman linked the Arizona senator to his friend and fundraiser - and convicted Watergate burglar and domestic terrorist G. Gordon Liddy - McCain recoiled. After the break, he admitted: "I know Gordon Liddy. He paid his debt, he went to prison. ... I'm not in any way embarrassed to know Gordon Liddy." Liddy, who plotted to kill newspaper columnist Jack Anderson and firebomb the Brookings Institution, hosted a 1998 fundraiser for McCain's re-election. On Liddy's radio show in 2007, the senator spoke proudly of the ex-con's "adherence to the principles and philosophies that keep our nation great." It's not likely that we'll hear Sarah Palin preaching that McCain also is "palling around with terrorists who would target their own country." * *GAFFE-IN

I'M A PROUD LIBERAL, I'M PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN. I'm looking forward to the election to see if these crazy "YOU HATE AMERICA" people get elected. * - - - - - * THEIR OWN SELF INTERESTS On FOX NOISE the other day, Joe The Plumber was asked: "Why do you view Baracks Tax Plan as 'socialism,' because that's the word you used?" Wurzelbacher (Joe) never even realized the brutal irony and self-contradiction of his answer: "I grew up poor. You know I actually have been on welfare, you know, my parents, you know, a couple different times, and we'd, you know, worked harder and got off of it and then, you know, actually did fairly well." A moment later, it was pointed out that Wurzelbacher would actually get a tax cut with Obama's plan. And then, in a line so pathetically filled with denial of who he was and where he came from, Wurzelbacher answered, "To be honest with you. You know I don't think it's right to -- you know, you know, there's principles involved. I don't want to make or have my taxes cut if it means somebody who worked hard or had a better break than I did, and take his money. I don't want his money. . . I don't want someone else's money who worked hard for it. No." Did you get that? Joe the Plumber and his parents were on welfare during hard times. But he doesn't want someone else's money and doesn't think it's fair to take money from one person to give it to another person. Can you wrap your mind around that without blowing two or three gaskets? And there, in a nugget of anti-wisdom, is all the delusional glory of white working class people who support Republicans. Apparently, for them, money for things like welfare or food stamps or whatever, which is fine when they need it, but is socialism when others do. * - - - - - *

McCain's confession that "he screwed up" did not free him from Letterman's cruel hook.
He questioned Palin's readiness to accept that 3 a.m. telephone call to lead the country through "the next 9/11 attack ..." With a straight face McCain replied, "Absolutely, she is. She has inspired Americans. That's the thing we need." Her preparation accrues from her experience as a mayor, governor and member of the PTA. When McCain debuted the Alaskan governor at the GOP convention, the public in the Lower 48 states reserved judgment and held out hope. It seemed clear even then that Palin was chosen, not so much to help govern, or God forbid to serve as president, but rather to boost McCain's sagging poll numbers and to spike the ticket's rally attendance. * *ACORN FIGHTS BACK

Bachmann Lies, Denies She Ever Called Barack Obama’s Views ‘Anti-American’
After right-wing Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) appeared on MSNBC’s Hardball on Friday and called for a McCarthyite investigation into the “anti-American views” of members of Congress, she has come under a withering storm of criticism. Her opponent — Democrat Elwyn Tinklenberg — has raised $640,000 since Bachmann’s comments. That's a lie. Here's what Bachmann said on Hardball: CHRIS MATTHEWS: So you believe that Barack Obama may have anti-American views? BACHMANN: Absolutely. I'm very concerned he may have anti-American views. This morning, Bachmann tried to undo the damage. Appearing on WCCO (Minneapolis' local CBS affiliate), Bachmann denied she ever called Barack Obama's views "anti-American": HOST: You do feel his [Obama’s] views are anti-American? BACHMANN: I feel his views are concerning. I’m calling on the media to investigate them. I’m not saying that his views are anti-American. That was a misreading of what I said. And so I don’t believe that’s my position. I’m calling on the media to take a look at what his views are.In her Hardball appearance, Bachmann said, “The news media should do a penetrating exposé” into the “views of the people in Congress and find out if they’re pro-America or anti-America.”

THE BIG ENDORSEMENT
So, when I look at all of this and I think back to my Army career, we've got two individuals, either one of them could be a good president. But which is the president that we need now? Which is the individual that serves the needs of the nation for the next period of time? And I come to the conclusion that because of his ability to inspire, because of the inclusive nature of his campaign, because he is reaching out all across America, because of who he is and his rhetorical abilities--and we have to take that into account--as well as his substance--he has both style and substance--he has met the standard of being a successful president, being an exceptional president. I think he is a transformational figure. He is a new generation coming into the world--onto the world stage, onto the American stage, and for that reason I'll be voting for Senator Barack Obama.
* *LETTERMAN HAS A TALK WITH JOHN MCCAIN PART 1 OF 5
Why is it that the girls on THE VIEW and LETTERMAN are asking the tough questions and not the press.
Letterman presses McCain on his plan to ‘get’ Osama Bin Laden. During the second presidential debate last week in Nashville, TN, McCain declared, “I know how to get” Osama bin Laden and promised that as President he would “get” him “no matter what.” Last night, David Letterman tried to follow up to get the specifics of McCain’s plan:LETTERMAN: You feel confidently that you have maybe the advantage of greater information than the current president? MCCAIN: No. LETTERMAN: But you have an idea– MCCAIN: I think I know, because of my many years being involved in these issues, how to develop a plan. One of the areas, of course, is human intelligence, which we’re very badly lacking. And so I am confident that we can get him.* *
MICHELE BACHMANN -- HAVE YOU NO SENSE OF DECENCY
In a television appearance that outraged Democrats are already describing as Joseph McCarthy politics, Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann claimed on Friday that Barack Obama and his wife Michelle held anti-American views and couldn't be trusted in the White House. She even called for the major newspapers of the country to investigate other members of Congress to "find out if they are pro-America or anti-America."
Appearing on MSNBC's Hardball, Bachmann went well off the reservation when it comes to leveling political charges against the Democratic nominee. After watching her last fFriday I decided I needed to do what I could to help defeat her in her upcoming election so I contributed $25.00 to her opponent El Tinklenberg. Turns out I wasn't the only one. It's fantastic that the netroots got behind Democratic Congressional candidate Elwyn Tinklenberg last night after Michelle Bachmann disgraced herself on Hardball. An astounding $488,000 has been raised for Tinklenberg's campaign during the last 24 hours. That's more than enough for him to run an aggressive paid media and GOTV effort during the next 16 days in Minnesota's sixth district. A campaign to censure Rep. Michele Bachmann over her remarks has been launched.
I'm old enough to remember the McCarthy hearings. This country doesn't need to do that again. I pray that you folks in congress will have the GUTS to take a stand against this kind of divisive talk.

YIPEEEEEE. . . I got my Presidential Ballot yesterday, so today I sit down at my kitchen table and VOTE FOR BARACK OBAMA AND JOE BIDEN, I can hardly wait. * - - - - - * DO YOU SEE THE DOUBLE STANDARD HERE? After weeks of hammering Barack Obama for having an association with a former Weather Undergound member, John McCain was asked Thursday afternoon about his own connections to a past felon: G. Gordon Liddy. The question came, of all places, from late night comedian David Letterman, who pressed the Senator to explain why he was friendly with the man who was convicted in the Watergate scandal of conspiracy, burglary, and illegal wiretapping. McCain - according to an advanced report of the show - initially said that he "met" Liddy before adding, "He paid his debt, he went to prison, he paid his debt." And yet, important to note in all of this, is that Liddy has been publicly unrepentant for his actions, much like Ayers. In an interview with the UK Independent Liddy said he didn't regret burglarizing the offices of the Democratic National Committee. BTW. . . unlike Liddy Bill Ayers has been CONVICTED OF NOTHING, ZIP, NADA, ZERO. A little fact the right likes to ignore. * - - - - - * ONE MORE THING. . . Senator McCain and running mate Governor Sarah Palin have Senator Obama "beat hands-down" on anti-semitic, Iranian and terrorist ties. Former Clinton aide Paul Begala pointed out on Sunday that McCain sat on the board of the U.S. Council for World Freedom, part of the World Anti-Communist League, having joined in 1982 after the Anti-Defamation League called it a "gathering place for racists and anti-semites with links to Nazi collaborators and right-wing death squads." The Council for World Freedom was funded by right-wing tycoon Sun Myung Moon, and among its ranks were founding CIA member and Iran-Contra figure John K. Singlaub. While McCain resigned from the organization due to a stated "lack of time," he attended one of its events as late as 1986, and the organization continued to use his name on its letterhead around the same time. Governor Palin's involvement with the pro-secession Alaskan Independence Party, to which husband Todd belonged, was also criticized. The Governor herself, in a March video message, told the organization to "keep up the good work." Founder Joe Vogler, in 1993, intended to give a speech denouncing "American tyranny" at the United Nations with the sponsorship of Iran. * - - - - - * As you will see below in my video "THERE'S MORE TO JOE THE PLUMBER THAN MEETS THE EYE" thing are not always what they seem at first blush. They are finding out stuff about Joe the Plumber with each passing hour. Yesterday Good Old Joe had done over 20 interviews, but today not so much. This weekend I VOTED FOR BARACK OBAMA. Well lets say I "Practice Voted", I received my Official 2008 Local Voters' Pamphlet this weekend. It's neat because there are lots of issues that I need to get additional info. It felt good to vote for Barack and I look forward to voting for him when it counts. * - - - - - * Back on 9/27/8 I did a short post on Rudy Giuliani having setup a firm 'to cash in on the Wall Street train wreck. Just last week I saw an article that said Paulson and his group would start giving out "NO BID" contracts to help spend this $700 billion bailout. Can you say RUDY. * - - - - - * 'Barack Osama' appears on hundreds of absentee ballots in New York. The Albany Times Union reports today that Sen. Barack Obama's (D-IL) "last name is spelled 'Osama' on hundreds of absentee ballots mailed out this week to voters in Rensselaer County," New York. Both Democratic and Republican county election officials insist the error was a "honest mistake" and a "typo," but the paper notes that "the letters 's' and 'b' are not exactly keyboard neighbors." During the Democratic primary, Obama's first name was misspelled on approximately 2000 absentee ballots in Florida. Sounds to me like they "outsourced" this to FOX NOISE. * - - - - - * With the presidential campaign approaching its final stretch, Barack Obama finds himself in an enviable position. One official close to the campaign said that September's fundraising haul set a new record, surpassing the $66 million Obama raised in August. Another aide, asked about the campaign's take, would only describe it: "big." * - - - - - * The assault that John McCain has launched against Obama's character - including repeated criticisms of the Illinois Democrat's association to former Weather Underground member Bill Ayers - has largely backfired. Obama sources shared internal campaign polling figures that show a sharp fall in positive feelings for the Republican ticket. Following the most recent spat of negative ads, they say, McCain's unfavorable rating has gone over 50 percent, notably higher than anything detected in recent public polling. VERY INTERESTING DISCUSSION PART 5 OF 5
When the collapse of Lehman Brothers set off an unexpected chain reaction that some experts warned could threaten the entire economy, the Bush Administration approached Congress with a three page plan: allow the Treasury to spend $700 billion to purchase the distressed mortgages causing banks so much pain.
Many members of Congress, and the public, balked at the idea of giving Paulson unchecked fiscal powers, but, responding to stern warnings of a financial meltdown, the House created a compromise bill around Paulson's plan, 110 pages long. Despite White House pressure and bi-partisan deal-making, the bill didn't pass. The Senate, which Constitutionally cannot originate appropriations bills, responded by pasting the plan into an existing appropriations bill and adding "sweeteners" — unrelated goodies designed to coax reluctant House members into voting for the bill. The Senate passed the bill, called the "Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008," and on Friday afternoon, the House followed suit, passing the bill 263 to 171, and President Bush signed it into law shortly afterwards. Georgetown University's legal and finance scholar, Emma Coleman Jordan, joins Bill Moyers to discuss how the bailout bill looks now and what it can and can't accomplish. * *FOX FINDS THE MOST IMPORTANT ISSUE OF OUR TIMES

I'm starting to get PISSED at John McCain. He's a LYING BASTARD. Sarah Palin is the same. And yes I'd like to walk in Cindy McCain's shoes or ride in one of her cars or fly in her jet for a little while. By the way Cindy did you say anything to your husband when HE VOTED TO NOT SUPPORT THE TROOPS AND YOUR SON? Or is that somehow different. * - - - - - * This guilt by association is just a BUNCH OF BULLSHIT and FOX NOISE host and LOUD MOUTH Sean Hannity knows it. Check out the post below and watch Robert Gibbs communication director for Barack Obama nail Hannity on this point. He like Bill O'Reilly don't get challenged enough and are able to shout down, turn off the mic or cut to a commercial. But once in awhile they get paid back and this is one of them. * - - - - - * Almost 5 years ago I did a re-fi on my house I wanted to get a lower interest rate, I didn't want any money just the lower interest rate. The re-fi was approved and just before the deal was to be signed I got a call from Countrywide my mortgage holder. They said I could get an even lower interest rate (4.125) by going with a 5 year ARM. I don't remember what my re-fi rate was but I'd guess about 6 percent. so I said I'll take it. My bad. They other day I got a notice that said my ARM was going to change to 6.125 percent. I knew this was going to happen and had been thinking about getting out from under this ARM CRAP, but until I got that notice I hadn't done anything about it. Now with all this BULLSHIT about the economy I was wondering if I could even get a mortgage. The talking heads keep saying the sky is falling, the sky is falling. So yesterday I went to my account on Countrywide to find out the current rate. I've been with Countrywide for years and so I didn't want to spend alot of money on this re-fi. For example I didn't want to pay to have my property reassessed as I just received the notice from Kitsap County. Well it turns out I was able to do that and while my fixed interest rate went up from 4.125 to 5.65 it's still under that 6.125 so I'll save some money. Plus there was a max that the could increase to which was 10% and I'm sure it would have gotten there in time. Oh, I got my three scores and they were all very high, two above 820 and one above 790. Guess it pays to pay your bills on time. All is good in my neck of the woods. * - - - - - * TODAYS BIG NUMBER: 57

VERY INTERESTING DISCUSSION PART 4 OF 5
When the collapse of Lehman Brothers set off an unexpected chain reaction that some experts warned could threaten the entire economy, the Bush Administration approached Congress with a three page plan: allow the Treasury to spend $700 billion to purchase the distressed mortgages causing banks so much pain.
* *BUSHED
Keith Olbermann has listed the various scandles in the Bush administration. Here are three more.
Bush puts McCain before country. The Associated Press, quoting two administration officials, reports that U.S. plans for an "interest section" in Iran have been cancelled for fear of affecting the 2008 presidential race or "being interpreted as political meddling." Keith Olbermann explains in Bushed. * *WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD

McCain chairman had racist streak. Bobby May, McCain campaign manager in Buchanan County, Virginia, was fired after writing at article about Barack Obama which featured quotes such as "Obama would hire the rapper Ludacris to paint the White House black." In Worst Person in the World, Keith Olbermann questions why other racists in the McCain campaign haven't been fired as well. * *DOGS RULE - YOU CAN SEE THE LOVE

While subprime loans deeply penetrated low-income and minority groups, a new study suggests that more upper-income borrowers and more whites took out such loans than any other groups. Compliance Technologies, a lending-industry consultancy, last month analyzed more than 1.9 million subprime loans originated in 2006, the height of the subprime lending frenzy, and found that roughly 56 percent went to non-Hispanic whites. Affluent borrowers, those with annual income at least 120 percent of their given area's median income, meanwhile, took out more than 39 percent of the loans. "I was surprised to see that non-Hispanic whites received more subprime loans than all minority groups combined," said Maurice Jourdain-Earl, a founder and managing director of Compliance Technologies. * - - - - - * Feds cut the key interest rate to 1.5 percent. YOU NEED TO FIGHT FIRE WITH FIRE. Over the weekend, John McCain's top adviser announced their plan to stop engaging in a debate over the economy and "turn the page" to more direct, personal attacks on Barack Obama. In the middle of the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression, they want to change the subject from the central question of this election. Perhaps because the policies McCain supported these past eight years and wants to continue are pretty hard to defend. But it's not just McCain's role in the current crisis that they're avoiding. The backward economic philosophy and culture of corruption that helped create the current crisis are looking more and more like the other major financial crisis of our time. During the savings and loan crisis of the late '80s and early '90s, McCain's political favors and aggressive support for deregulation put him at the center of the fall of Lincoln Savings and Loan, one of the largest in the country. More than 23,000 investors lost their savings. Overall, the savings and loan crisis required the federal government to bail out the savings of hundreds of thousands of families and ultimately cost American taxpayers $124 billion. Tell your friends, family, and neighbors to check it out. <--- Click here to go to the site.* - - - - - * SOME RANDOM THOUGHTS:
