I'M JUST SAYING.jpg

Who are these people that keep calling for and end to the democratic primary process? Last I checked this process runs from January 2008 until June 2008. So IT AIN'T OVER TIL IT'S OVER or THE FAT LADY SINGS.

How come there isn't a TV Channel or at the very least a program that is slanted toward the dems. You look at FOX and they have the whole Network working for the republicans.

I see that Harold Ford, Jr. has switched to MSNBC from FOX NOISE. I'm still unhappy with him for going on FOX in the first place. They are not his friend and until they stop their BULLSHIT style it doesn't make sense to have anything to do with them.

THE MORE THINGS CHANGE THE MORE THEY REMAIN THE SAME

032908_BM_report.jpg

I saw this on Bill Moyers last Friday. I say it all in the title. I'm just not sure that in forty years we've come that far when so much is made of a few sound bites that are really edited from several speeches and put in a continues loop and played over and over.

THEY CALL HIM MR MAYOR

033108_cory_booker.jpg

I think the BEST show on all of TV is Bill Moyers on PBS. Week after week he has guests on that provide a conversation that is open, honest, interesting and thoughtful.

This past Friday he had Cory Booker a young man who is the Mayor of Newark, NJ. He seems to have the same qualities that Barack Obama has. He's part of the new generation of Americans that are ready, willing and VERY ABLE to except that torch that has been passed.

This is a five part series. Kick back and enjoy the conversation.

YouCantBeSeriousColor.jpg

DON'T TRUST EVERYTHING YOU READ

The other day I received the below email from a friend. . .

* * * * * * * * * Start of email: * * * * * * * * *

Didn't know this did you?

If you should ever be forced by a robber to withdraw money from an ATM machine, you can notify the police by entering your Pin # in reverse. For example if your pin number is 1234 then you would put in 4321. The ATM recognizes that your pin number is backwards from the ATM card you placed in the machine.

The machine will still give you the money you requested, but unknown to the robber, the police will be immediately dispatched to help you. This information was recently broadcasted on FOX TV and it states that it is seldom used because people don't know it exists.

Please pass this along to everyone possible!

* * * * * * * * * end email * * * * * * * * *

When I got this email I was skeptical for several reasons. First I've never heard of doing this. Second I thought Oh geeze, IF I DON'T KNOW ABOUT THIS SECRET CODE WHAT'S THE VALUE? HOW WOULD I KNOW TO UES IT. Third and finally (maybe most importantly) it's source was "FOX NOISE". I'm just saying. . .

Anyway I decided to check with my Credit Union to get some expert opinion regardless of how stupid it might make me look. So I sent them the above email and asked "Can you tell me if this is true or not?"

Here is their reply: Mick you dumb STUPID S**T ( I added that part) Thank you for your email. Entering your pin number backwards will not summon the police to the ATM that you are currently using. If your pin number is not entered correctly, money will not be disbursed from the machine.

As I said I knew the answer before I asked the question, it's one of those "If it sounds to good to be true it probably is" kind of deals.

THE NEW BUSH BUMPER STICKERS

America--Bush-whacked

BUSH ADMINISTRATION CLAIMS VS. THE FACTS:

No mobile biological weapons labs

YouCantBeSeriousColor.jpg

It's hard to believe but maybe it isn't. The other day on FOX NOISE one of their pendants reused that old BULLSHIT LIE about how Al Gore said he invented the Internet.

Here once again is what he really said in his interview with CNN's Wolf Blitzer: "During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the Internet. I took the initiative in moving forward a whole range of initiatives that have proven to be important to our country's economic growth and environmental protection, improvements in our educational system."

That's what he said, that's all he said.

It then was reported by the Wire Service as ". . . After Gore took credit for the Internet. . ."

note - first use found so far of "invent" wording is in a mailing-list message headline composed by Declan McCullagh, publicizing a Republican press release from the story: House Majority Leader Armey on Gore "inventing the Internet"

The morale of this story I guess is if you want to be on FOX NOISE you need to be a BIG ASS LIER.

I'm one of those "PLEDGED DELEGATES" that Hillary has been talking about the past few days. I'm at the lowest rung on the latter but I'm not about to change my vote for any reason.

I was voted to go as a caucus member by my neighbors with the FULL UNDERSTANDING that I would vote for Obama. That's what I said I would do and that's EXACTLY WHAT I WILL DO.

I'm not interested in playing games saying one thing and doing another. I think Hillary is starting to hurt the democrats. That's not a good thing.

Besure to watch today's Worst Person on WAL_MART you'll just shake your head.

THEY WON'T TELL YOU THIS

I'm putting together this email about how I see things regarding this Rev. Wright CRAP. It just pisses me off that journalist can't seem to provide some BALANCE on this issue. I wonder how many people know any of these facts about the Rev. Wright.

I keep hearing that the "BLUE COLLER" worker wants to know this stuff. Well if that is true I'm pretty sure in today's world most have a computer and connection to the internet and as I say below it only took me a couple of minutes to find out some info that I didn't know about this issue.

You LAZY ASS JOURNALIST and PUNDITS make your BLOOD MONEY the easiest way possible. You get on a story that has been carefully created together out of 9 or 10 twenty second sound bites and suggest that represents the life work of Rev. Jeremiah Wright.

You give NO BACKGROUND, NO CONTEXT just the endless loop of these half dozen or so clips. One would think that in a 24/7 News day you could find a few minutes to provide this background/context. Well silly me I'm thinking about what honest hardworking people do not you LAZY JOURNALIST.

Here is just a little information that you couldn't seem to find or missed. See below for full explanation of the three points.

1.) Rev. Wright's Education, military service, and achievements:

Well it took all of about 2-3 minutes for me to load my Browser and key in Wrights name and push enter. How hard was that? You should try it yourself.

One thing I learned from my search is that this is not a dumb guy and he did serve in the Marines and the Navy. Wonder if Dick Cheney ever served?

2.) Career as minister:

When Rev. Wright became pastor of Trinity United Church of Christ there were only 87 members. Today I've heard that number is around 8,000.

Wright has received three presidential commendations from President Lyndon B. Johnson and was named one of Ebony magazine's top fifteen preachers.

3.) Relationship with Barack Obama:

Barack Obama first met Wright and joined his church in the 1980s. If he's been running for president since the 1980s he's got a much better vision for the future than most don't you think?

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:

1.) Rev. Wright's Education, military service, and achievements:

From 1959 to 1961, Wright attended Virginia Union University,[1] an historically black school in Richmond. He then joined the United States Marine Corps and served in the 2nd Marine Division with the rank of private first class. He subsequently transferred to the United States Navy and entered the Corpsman School at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center, where he graduated as valedictorian in 1963[5]. He was trained as cardiopulmonary technician at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland and graduated as salutatorian in 1967[5].

Wright then enrolled at Howard University in Washington, D.C., where he received a bachelor's degree in 1968 and a master's degree in English in 1969. He served on the Board of Directors for the Malcolm X School of Nursing from 1974 until 1979[5]. He also earned a master's degree from the University of Chicago Divinity School. [5]Wright holds a Doctor of Ministry degree (1990) from the United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio, where he studied under Samuel DeWitt Proctor.

How hard was that? Well it took me all of about 2-3 minutes for me to load my Browser and key in Wrights name and push enter. You should try it yourself.

2.) Career as minister:

Wright became pastor of the Trinity United Church of Christ on March 1, 1972, at a time when its membership was only 87 members. [1] Wright has received a Rockefeller Fellowship, and has also been a professor at Chicago Theological Seminary, Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary and other educational institutions. Wright has also served as the Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Black Theology Project, and as a member of the Board of Trustees of Virginia Union University and of the City Colleges of Chicago. Wright has received seven honorary doctorate degrees, including from Colgate University, Valparaiso University, United Theological Seminary and Chicago Theological Seminary. [5] Wright, who began the "Ministers in Training" ("M.I.T.") program at Trinity United Church of Christ, has been a national leader in promoting theological education and the preparation of seminarians for the African-American church.[6] Wright has received three presidential commendations from President Lyndon B. Johnson[5] and was named one of Ebony magazine's top fifteen preachers.[7]

3.) Relationship with Barack Obama:

Barack Obama, a candidate for the Democratic nomination for president, first met Wright and joined his church in the 1980s, while he was working as a community organizer in Chicago before attending Harvard Law School.[8] Obama and his wife, Michelle, were later married by Wright, and both their children were baptized by him.[9] The title of Obama's memoir, The Audacity of Hope, was inspired by one of Wright's sermons[8] and he credits Wright with strengthening his faith.[9]

The public invocation before Obama's presidential announcement was scheduled to be given by Wright, but Obama withdrew the invitation the night before the event.[10] Wright wrote a rebuttal letter to the editor disputing the characterization of the account as reported in the New York Times article.[11]

In late 2007, Wright was appointed to Barack Obama's African American Religious Leadership Committee, a group of over 170 national black religious leaders who supported Obama's bid for the Democratic nomination;[12] however, it was announced in March 2008 that Wright was no longer serving as a member of this group.[13]

EXPANDING A LITTLE ON MY POST FROM YESTERDAY

032408_RS_deggans.jpg

I watched CNN'S Reliable Sources yesterday and they did a segment on the Rev Wright dustup. Did you see a Sunday show that didn't do at least one segment on this. I sure didn't.

I was so impressed with one guest Eric Deggans that I sent him an email to tell him what a great job he did on the show. See below.

What I don't get is that these SO CALLED JOURNALISTS don't even seem to do BASIC let alone investigative reporting. It would have only taken about $9.95 for them to buy the CD and listen to the full speech. My god that might mean they where doing there job.

By the way when you can see that a 4 minute video clip has been put together by using 11 different sermons don't you think that that is just WAY TOMUCH CREATIVE EDITING.

Here is Mr. Deggans web site: Click to visit his site.

082308_RS_truth.jpg

Hi Mr. Deggans,

I saw you on Reliable Sources this morning and I was so impressed with your response to all this "CRAP" (excuse my French) about what Rev. Jeremiah Wright said in his church. Honestly, it brought tears to my eyes.

I'm a 71 year old white guy that supports Barack Obama. I'm retired but I manage to send his campaign $25 per month, so it's not just talk for me.

I thought that back a year or so ago we would see an honest discussion about race in America when Don Imus made his stupid remarks about that woman's basketball team. I saw a number of new faces on TV that I thought would add a new and different perspective to this issue. It didn't happen.

Cable TV can follow a car chase in southern California for several hours without breaking for a commercial. On this issue it's over in about 8 minutes and then we are off to see what Paris Hilton or Britney Spears are up to.

Today for the FIRST TIME on TV you where able to bring a little background and context to this discussion. It's funny because on my blog (www.thebscorner.com) just this morning my post was on this very "CHICKEN COMING HOME TO ROOST" comment that I saw on The Huffington Post. It provides a YouTube video that is about 17 minutes long that gives that context you talked about.

Just this morning I saw another YouTube video that is 4:14 minutes long that puts this clips together. I counted what Rev. Wright was wearing and there was 11 changes of clothes, remember the total video was 4:14 minutes long. So every 23 seconds on average is the time they used his words from different speeches. There were also some seven obvious splices so it's impossible to know what kind of "CREATIVE EDITING" was done.

I fully understand the agenda of the right wing nut jobs, but don't get why the Main Stream Media don't provide just a little context to this kind of stuff. It's not like the video wasn't available. I guess it's just to much work when they have a sound bite they can use.

This is the first time I've seen you on TV and hope they will use you more. It's important to hear the truth and to see someone stand up to these lies.

Sincerely,

Mick Horan

Bremerton, Wa.

ANSWER THE DAMN QUESTION

082308_RS_question.jpg

Also on that Reliable Sources program they had right-wing tool Michael Medved on and Howard Kurtz asked him a very specific question which was. "Why didn't the journalists seek to do any investigative reporting."

So what does Medved do he says "That's a complicated question"

Is he nuts? What's complicated about that question? They simply didn't do their job.

Then he says "Obama is trying to change the subject."

Did he even listen to the Obama speech? Doesn't sound like it.

So why can't he just answer the damn question?

That's the short 8 second sound bite that was played over and over the past week or so. The right wing loves to do this kind of CRAP because they know that they can get away with it. Who's going to check?

Well this EASTER I think it's an appropriate day to fight back. . . to tell the truth. . . to tell the FULL story. Spend about 15 minutes to watch the below video, you'll change your mind. They are not going to get away with it. . . NOT THIS TIME.

Just saw this on Huffpost and thought I should share. I have now watched Wright's sermon in context and I must say I have been struck with a little shame. Like an avid Obama Supporter I defended Obama against the 8 seconds sound bytes that were played endlessly but inside I was hurt by Wright's comments and chalked it up to the 'Crazy Uncle' explanation. At the very end, he preaches about self-examination and I guess I, along with most of America, have a lot of examining to do.

This is some real Journalistic Work by Sam Stein over at Huffpost. All the credit for this story is his. I am merely passing it on.

AMERICA'S CHICKENS COMING HOME TO ROOST

Meet the man who inspired Reverend Jeremiah Wright's now famous tirade about America's foreign policy inciting the terrorist attacks of September 11.

His name is Ambassador Edward Peck. And he is a retired, white, career U.S. diplomat who served 32-years in the U.S. Foreign Service and was chief of the U.S. mission to Iraq under Jimmy Carter -- hardly the black-rage image with which Wright has been stigmatized.

In fact, when Wright took the pulpit to give his post-9/11 address -- which has since become boiled down to a five second sound bite about "America's chickens coming home to roost" -- he prefaced his remarks as a "faith footnote," an indication that he was deviating from his sermon.

"I heard Ambassador Peck on an interview yesterday," Wright declared. "He was on Fox News. This is a white man and he was upsetting the Fox News commentators to no end. He pointed out, a white man, an ambassador, that what Malcolm X said when he got silenced by Elijah Muhammad was in fact true: America's chickens are coming home to roost."

Wright then went on to list more than a few U.S. foreign policy endeavors that, by the tone of his voice and manner of his expression, he viewed as more or less deplorable. This included, as has been demonstrated in the endless loop of clips from his sermon, bombing Hiroshima and Nagasaki and nuking "far more than the thousands in New York and the Pentagon and we never batted an eye."

"Violence begets violence," Wright said, "hatred begets hatred, and terrorism begets terrorism."

And then he concluded by putting the comments on Peck's shoulders: "A white ambassador said that yall, not a black militant, not a reverend who preaches about racism, an ambassador whose eyes are wide open and is trying to get us to wake up and move away from this dangerous precipice... the ambassador said that the people we have wounded don't have the military capability we have, but they do have individuals who are willing to die and take thousands with them... let me stop my faith footnote right there."

WHAT YOU DIDN'T HEAR - WATCH THE VIDEO IN CONTEX

* *

AMBASSADOR EDWARD PECK

032308_ed_peck.jpg

So it seems that while Wright did believe American held some responsibility for 9/11, his views, which have been described as radically outside the political mainstream, were actually influenced by a career foreign policy official.

Who is Peck? The ambassador, who has offered controversial criticism of Israeli policy in the West Bank but also warned against the Iraq War, was lecturing on a cruise ship and was unavailable for comment. But officials at Peck's former organization, the Council for the National Interest, a non-profit group that advocates reducing Israel's influence on U.S. Middle East policy, offered descriptions of the man.

"Peck is very outspoken," said Eugene Bird, who now heads CNI. "He is also very good at making phrases that have a resonance with the American people. When he came off of that Fox News, a few days later he said they would never invite me back again."

And what, exactly, did Peck say in that Fox News interview that inspired Wright's words?

Here are some quotes from an appearance the Ambassador made on the network on October 11, 2001, which may or may not have been the segment Wright was referring to. On the show, Peck said he thought it was illogical to tie Saddam Hussein to the terrorist attacks on 9/11, and that while the then-Iraqi leader had "some very sound and logical reasons not to like [the United States]," he and Osama bin Laden had no other ties.

From there, Peck went on to ascribe motives for what prompted the 9/11 attacks. "Stopping the economic embargo and bombings of Iraq," he said, "things to which Osama bin Laden has alluded as the kinds of things he doesn't like. He doesn't think it's appropriate for the United States to be doing, from his perspective, all the terrible things that he sees us as having been doing, the same way Saddam Hussein feels. So from that perspective, they have a commonality of interests. But they also have a deeply divergent view of the role of Islam in government, which would be a problem."

BREAKING NEWS: Part 4 of

032008_JS_cable.jpg

Of course I can't fully understand what it's like to be black in America but just as I don't need to put my hand on a red hot stove top burner to know it's hot I have a brain and I can reason and imagine what it is like and know what is right and what is wrong.

For example when I see a sign in front of a store that says "N****RS AND APES IN BACK" as I did in the ESPN documentary BLACKMAGIC the other night. It's not rocket science to know and understand the meaning of that sign. Nor is hard to understand how that one small example can hurt someone especially a young child.

This kind of CRAP has gone on for years that is undeniable. Yes it's true that we as a country have move forward which is a good thing but do you really think it's where we should be some 200 years later?

We have much more work to do and that was one of the underlying themes of Barack Obama's speech the other night.

ONE LAST TIME

I'm saying this one last time. Think about it.

I've seen about 5 or 6 minutes total of Jeremiah Wrights sermons on TV. One of the right wings rants is that Barack spent 20 years in that church.

Well I did a little math:

20 yrs X 365 days = 7300 days X 24 hrs = 175200 hrs X 60 min = 10,512,000 total mins. Vs 6 mins of TV video.

That does not seem to me to be that much out of balance when you consider we have all said and done things that maybe we are not that proud of.

BREAKING NEWS: Part 3 of

031908_barack_obama.jpg BARACK OBAMA delivers major speech on race. March 18: Democratic Sen. Barack Obama delivers the most racially pointed speech yet of his presidential campaign. * *

Did you watch Barack Obama's speech on race today? To me it was equal to Martin Luther Kings "I HAVE A DREAM" speech. At times I cried. I cried because at my age I might not be around to see him complete his second term. I might not be around to see the changes he talks about. I so want him to be the next president of the United States of America. I want to once again have that feeling we all had so many years ago in the early sixties.

We have all seen the video loop of Rev Wrights comments over and over and over again. The right wing is quick to make the point that well Obama has been a member of that church for over 20 years yet we have seen only about 6 minutes of video. So I thought maybe it's time to add some context to what we have seen on TV.

As I've said I've seen about 5 or 6 minutes total of Jeremiah Wrights sermons on TV. Well lets just do a little math: 20 yrs X 365 days = 7300 days X 24 hrs = 175200 hrs X 60 min = 10,512,000 total mins. Vs 6 mins of TV video. That does not seem to me to be that much out of balance when you consider we have all said and done things that maybe we are not that proud of.

After I watched his speech I was very impressed and had a happy feeling inside. I remember back last year when IMUS said what he said and I thought at that time that maybe, just maybe we could now start that dialog. It didn't happen then and I wonder if it will happen now. I'm not so sure.

The folks on the right just can't find anything that Obama said that was good. They wanted him to throw Rev Wright under the bus.

Throughout the first year of this campaign, against all predictions to the contrary, we saw how hungry the American people were for this message of unity. Despite the temptation to view my candidacy through a purely racial lens, we won commanding victories in states with some of the whitest populations in the country. In South Carolina, where the Confederate Flag still flies, we built a powerful coalition of African Americans and white Americans.

This is not to say that race has not been an issue in the campaign. At various stages in the campaign, some commentators have deemed me either "too black" or "not black enough." We saw racial tensions bubble to the surface during the week before the South Carolina primary. The press has scoured every exit poll for the latest evidence of racial polarization, not just in terms of white and black, but black and brown as well.

And yet, it has only been in the last couple of weeks that the discussion of race in this campaign has taken a particularly divisive turn.

On one end of the spectrum, we've heard the implication that my candidacy is somehow an exercise in affirmative action; that it's based solely on the desire of wide-eyed liberals to purchase racial reconciliation on the cheap. On the other end, we've heard my former pastor, Reverend Jeremiah Wright, use incendiary language to express views that have the potential not only to widen the racial divide, but views that denigrate both the greatness and the goodness of our nation; that rightly offend white and black alike.

I have already condemned, in unequivocal terms, the statements of Reverend Wright that have caused such controversy. For some, nagging questions remain. Did I know him to be an occasionally fierce critic of American domestic and foreign policy? Of course. Did I ever hear him make remarks that could be considered controversial while I sat in church? Yes. Did I strongly disagree with many of his political views? Absolutely - just as I'm sure many of you have heard remarks from your pastors, priests, or rabbis with which you strongly disagreed.

But the remarks that have caused this recent firestorm weren't simply controversial. They weren't simply a religious leader's effort to speak out against perceived injustice. Instead, they expressed a profoundly distorted view of this country - a view that sees white racism as endemic, and that elevates what is wrong with America above all that we know is right with America; a view that sees the conflicts in the Middle East as rooted primarily in the actions of stalwart allies like Israel, instead of emanating from the perverse and hateful ideologies of radical Islam.

As such, Reverend Wright's comments were not only wrong but divisive, divisive at a time when we need unity; racially charged at a time when we need to come together to solve a set of monumental problems - two wars, a terrorist threat, a falling economy, a chronic health care crisis and potentially devastating climate change; problems that are neither black or white or Latino or Asian, but rather problems that confront us all.

Given my background, my politics, and my professed values and ideals, there will no doubt be those for whom my statements of condemnation are not enough. Why associate myself with Reverend Wright in the first place, they may ask? Why not join another church? And I confess that if all that I knew of Reverend Wright were the snippets of those sermons that have run in an endless loop on the television and You Tube, or if Trinity United Church of Christ conformed to the caricatures being peddled by some commentators, there is no doubt that I would react in much the same way

But the truth is, that isn't all that I know of the man. The man I met more than twenty years ago is a man who helped introduce me to my Christian faith, a man who spoke to me about our obligations to love one another; to care for the sick and lift up the poor. He is a man who served his country as a U.S. Marine; who has studied and lectured at some of the finest universities and seminaries in the country, and who for over thirty years led a church that serves the community by doing God's work here on Earth - by housing the homeless, ministering to the needy, providing day care services and scholarships and prison ministries, and reaching out to those suffering from HIV/AIDS.

To be continued.

Looking back on the past five years of war.

Here are some things to remind you of what the Bush administration as said on the lead up to the war and over the following five years. Yes it's really been five GOD DAMN YEARS.

He told us about WMD, mobile labs, secret sources, aluminum tubes, yellow cake.

He has told us the war in necessary because Saddam was a material threat, because of 9/11, because of Osama bin Laden, al Qaeda, terrorism in general, to liberate Iraq, to spread freedom, to spread democracy, to prevent terrorism by gas price increases, because this was a guy who tried to kill his dad, because 439 words into that speech last night he trotted out 9/11 again.

In advocating and prosecuting this war, he passed on a chance to get Abu Musab al Zarqawi, to get Moqtada al Sadr, to get bin Laden.

He sent in fewer troops than the generals told him to.

He ordered the Iraqi army disbanded and the Iraqi government de-Baathified.

He shortchanged Iraqi training.

He neglected to plan for wide spread looting.

He did not anticipate sectarian violence.

He sent in troops without life-saving equipment.

He gave jobs to foreign contractors and not Iraqis.

He staffed U.S. positions there based on partisanship, not professionalism

He and his government told us America had prevailed, mission accomplished, the resistance was in its last throws.

He has insisted more troops were not necessary.

He has now insisted more troops are necessary.

He has insisted it's up to the generals, and then removed some of the generals who said more troops would not be necessary.

He has trumpeted the turning points, the fall of Baghdad, the death of Uday and Qusay, the capture of Saddam, a provisional government, a charter, a constitution, the trial of Saddam, elections, purple fingers, another government, the death of Saddam.

He has assured us we would be greeted as liberators with flowers.

As they stood up, we would stand down.

We would stay the course.

We were never about stay the course.

We would never have to go door to door in Baghdad, and last night, that to gain Iraqi's trust, we would go door to door in Baghdad.

He told us the enemy was al Qaeda, foreign fighters, terrorists, Baathists, and now Iran and Syria.

The war would pay for itself.

It would cost 1.7 billion dollars, 100 billion, 400 billion, half a trillion.

Last night's speech alone cost us another 6 billion.

And after all of that, now it is his credibility versus that of Generals, diplomats, allies, Democrats, Republicans, the Iraq Study Group, past presidents, voters last November, and the majority of the American people.

A BLAST FROM THE PAST - PRETTY WELL CONFIRMED

BREAKING NEWS: Part 2 of

I guess I do ramble but I think it's important to know my background and upbringing before I get into the real point of this rant which is about Jeremiah Wright.

I was trying to make the point that I grew up in an integrated neighborhood and went to an integrated grade school and later Garfield High that probable was the most integrated school in Seattle if not the whole state.

Anyway my views would not have been as liberal had my family not moved from Ballard when I was 5 or 6. Looking back I'm glad we did.

Anyway growing up in the central area of Seattle made us part of that melting pot of America before it was the law. Looking at my sixth grade class there was Paul Chihara, Kent Sakamoto and Elaine Sakamoto all Japanese, Lily Padua and Charlie Edwards Philiippino, Freddy Maxwell a African American, Herbie Schuler a German, John Parason an Italian, Billy Gilmore and Peggy Flynn both Irish and many others that I can't remember their names.

We all got along and didn't have a problem playing together. My very first love was Lily Padua that little Philiippino girl in the sixth grade. I know that wasn't the way it was in the many other parts of the country especial in the south. But I also know it wasn't talked about either so we in a way lived in a bubble of our own making.

It amazes me even today just how much or maybe I should say how little I know about Black history. Just this last Sunday and Monday ESPN ran a documentary called Black Magic about the trouble black basketball players had first playing in collages and later the NBA. Something I should have known but didn't. That just one little example of how History has been glossed over our not even talked about in America.

It's hard even today to see how the blacks were treated in the south. In one scene in part one of that ESPN video "BLACKMAGIC". They used historic footage from that time period. I remember one sign on the front of a store that said "N****RS AND APES IN BACK". People need to just HONESTLY TRY to put them selves in the shoes of black people. The hurt, humiliation and the pain that these people had to endure day after day. I'm not sure I could have handled it as well as these folks have done over the many, many years of this abuse.

Fear and intimidation are powerful weapons. We see it used even today as regards the war in Iraq and the war on terrorism. Why would you think that it is any less effective against the blacks over the past hundreds of years.

Can you not see how people like Jeremiah Wright might think, say and feel the why he does having lived through that period. He has been fighting injustice ALL HIS LIFE. He has seen that sign in front of the that store. He knew what would happen to him if he didn't tow the line.

Barack Obama is talking about RACE in America today so I'll close this for now and add to it tomorrow.

To be continued.

ONE WHITE MANS ANSWER TO THE OBAMA/WRIGHT DUSTUP

BREAKING NEWS: I'm not BLACK. How do I know this I look in the mirror each morning and I can tell instantly that I'm WHITE.

Well so what? Exactly SO WHAT, nobody cares that I'm white. But there are still people in America that do care about the color of your skin. . . we just refuse to talk about it openly and honestly and that's to bad.

This big dust up over Jeremiah Wright is a classic example of part of the problem. He like me came of age in the late fifties and early sixties. We are part of the HAS BEEN generation. As the old Dylan song goes "Times they Are A Changing".

Let me backup.

The first time I knew a Black person I was about 7-8 years old living in the Central district of Seattle. I went to a catholic school, The Immaculate Conception. I'm no longer a practicing catholic. It might be hard to believe but the eight years I went there I was also an alter boy (I'm hoping that's enough to get me into heaven when the time comes).

Anyway we had one family move into our all white neighborhood. I'm sure they must have been scared. McGee was there name and they had a boy they called Lonny-B (I'm not sure of the exact spelling but if you say the name "LonneyB McGee" that's how he was known.)

This may sound overly dramatic but it's true. Our neighborhood was changing in front of our eyes. It didn't happen in a week, month or year but rather over several years. After the war things really changed. We had Japanese on one side of our house and a black family on the other side. And guess what. . . we all got along.

Over the years our neighborhood became fully integrated. It became NORMAL. I even remember how my dad who was a staunch democrat even vote for several black Politian's and that was in the fifties. He liked to say "The only good republican was a dead republican." That's my dad.

To be continued. . .

END OF WEEK BUZZ

EXTRA SPECIAL

031408_obama_faith.jpg

On My Faith and My Church - Barack Obama

The pastor of my church, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, who recently preached his last sermon and is in the process of retiring, has touched off a firestorm over the last few days. He's drawn attention as the result of some inflammatory and appalling remarks he made about our country, our politics, and my political opponents.

Let me say at the outset that I vehemently disagree and strongly condemn the statements that have been the subject of this controversy. I categorically denounce any statement that disparages our great country or serves to divide us from our allies. I also believe that words that degrade individuals have no place in our public dialogue, whether it's on the campaign stump or in the pulpit. In sum, I reject outright the statements by Rev. Wright that are at issue.

Because these particular statements by Rev. Wright are so contrary to my own life and beliefs, a number of people have legitimately raised questions about the nature of my relationship with Rev. Wright and my membership in the church. Let me therefore provide some context.

As I have written about in my books, I first joined Trinity United Church of Christ nearly twenty years ago. I knew Rev. Wright as someone who served this nation with honor as a United States Marine, as a respected biblical scholar, and as someone who taught or lectured at seminaries across the country, from Union Theological Seminary to the University of Chicago. He also led a diverse congregation that was and still is a pillar of the South Side and the entire city of Chicago. It's a congregation that does not merely preach social justice but acts it out each day, through ministries ranging from housing the homeless to reaching out to those with HIV/AIDS.

Most importantly, Rev. Wright preached the gospel of Jesus, a gospel on which I base my life. In other words, he has never been my political advisor; he's been my pastor. And the sermons I heard him preach always related to our obligation to love God and one another, to work on behalf of the poor, and to seek justice at every turn.

The statements that Rev. Wright made that are the cause of this controversy were not statements I personally heard him preach while I sat in the pews of Trinity or heard him utter in private conversation. When these statements first came to my attention, it was at the beginning of my presidential campaign. I made it clear at the time that I strongly condemned his comments. But because Rev. Wright was on the verge of retirement, and because of my strong links to the Trinity faith community, where I married my wife and where my daughters were baptized, I did not think it appropriate to leave the church.

Let me repeat what I've said earlier. All of the statements that have been the subject of controversy are ones that I vehemently condemn. They in no way reflect my attitudes and directly contradict my profound love for this country.

With Rev. Wright's retirement and the ascension of my new pastor, Rev. Otis Moss, III, Michelle and I look forward to continuing a relationship with a church that has done so much good. And while Rev. Wright's statements have pained and angered me, I believe that Americans will judge me not on the basis of what someone else said, but on the basis of who I am and what I believe in; on my values, judgment and experience to be President of the United States.

Why is it SO HARD for Florida to run an election?

I have to laugh when I hear these Talking Head Pundits scratch their head talking about the Black vote going for Obama by about 90%. Gee do you think that the years of slavery and oppression might have something to do with their distrust of the white race I wonder.

We in America refuse to have an HONEST discussion about race in this country. Remember back a year or so ago when IMUS said what he said. At that time we all talked about how NOW we can have that discussion about this problem. That lasted about fifteen minutes and we moved on to the next Paris Hilton or Brittney Spears BULLSHIT. The race issue just kind of went the way of the DODO bird.

HAS THE PRESIDENT NO SHAME

031308_bush_nuts.jpg

I just don't get President Bush.

President Bush let his inner adventurer out while discussing the state of the war in Afghanistan with military and civilian personnel. While those in Afghanistan detailed the logistical and diplomatic problems via teleconference, the President took a much more whimsical approach to their mission. Via Reuters:

"I must say, I'm a little envious," Bush said. "If I were slightly younger and not employed here, I think it would be a fantastic experience to be on the front lines of helping this young democracy succeed."

"It must be exciting for you ... in some ways romantic, in some ways, you know, confronting danger. You're really making history, and thanks," Bush said.

Now this is from the man that used every means possible to STAY OUT OF THE ACTIVE SERVICE.

Go figure.

IT'S TIME TO BRING THESE GUYS HOME WITH HONOR

031308_coming_home.jpg 031308_home_coming.jpg

A new poll from the Pew Research Center finds a staggering drop in the public awareness about fatalities in Iraq:

Public awareness of the number of American military fatalities in Iraq has declined sharply since last August. Today, just 28% of adults are able to say that approximately 4,000 Americans have died in the Iraq war. As of March 10, the Department of Defense had confirmed the deaths of 3,974 U.S. military personnel in Iraq. (Note: the number of U.S. deaths confirmed by the Department of Defense is 3,974. Thirteen U.S. deaths are pending confirmation, for a total of 3,987).

In August 2007, 54% correctly identified the fatality level at that time (about 3,500 deaths). In previous polls going back to the spring of 2004, about half of respondents could correctly estimate the number of U.S. fatalities around the time of the survey.

MORE BILL O'REILLY FAIR AND BALANCED BULLSHIT

031208_BO_hatit.jpg

Listen to these two very short video from the O'REILLY FACTOR and you'll come away wondering like me who the hell believes his BULLSHIT.

In the first clip he says, as he does so often about many subjects that he HATES reporting on it regardless of what IT is. Then as you watch the rest of his show he'll have several segments on that subject that he just said he hates to cover.

For example just this week he has covered the Spitzer story everyday this week with at least 2 segments and some times three. Yet he says he HATES DOING IT.

*

* 031208_BO_pay.jpg In the second clip he says Spitzer should do something positive with his life and money.

I just laugh that he even has the guts to make such a statement considering his problem when back in October 2004 he was hit with a Sex Harassment Suit that was later put to bed with a reported $20 million dollar settlement.

Now that's a lot of money and you wonder why he couldn't be doing something positive with his life and money.

Guess it's easier to see the problem with someone else than it is see your own problems.

By the way have you ever noticed how often the O-MAN uses almost naked women in his program? Remember this is this is the guy that is looking out for you. The morale crusader in just one segment last night used 17 images of women in that show. It's the old do as I say not as I do BULLSHIT. *

WHEN WAS THE INTERNET INVENTED?

The development of what we now call the Internet started in 1957 when the Soviet Union launched Sputnik 1, the first satellite, beating the United States into space. The powers behind the American military at the time became highly alarmed as this meant that the USSR could theoretically launch bombs into space, and then drop them anywhere on earth. In 1958 the concerns of people in the US military triggered the creation of the Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).

SPECIAL COMMENT BY KEITH OLBERMANN

031308_keith_olbermann.jpg

On his program last night Keith Olbermann did one of his "Special Comments" segments. This time it was directed at the Clinton camp.

Below is just the start of his comments watch the video for the full piece.

Finally, as promised, a Special Comment on the presidential campaign of the Junior Senator from New York.

By way of necessary preface, President and Senator Clinton - and the Senator's mother, and the Senator's brother - were of immeasurable support to me at the moments when these very commentaries were the focus of the most surprise, the most uncertainty, and the most anger. My gratitude to them is abiding.

Also, I am not here endorsing Senator Obama's nomination, nor suggesting it is inevitable.

Thus I have fought with myself over whether or not to say anything.

Senator, as it has reached its apex in their tone-deaf, arrogant, and insensitive reaction to the remarks of Geraldine Ferraro. . . your own advisors are slowly killing your chances to become President.

Senator, their words, and your own, are now slowly killing the chances for any Democrat to become President.

In your tepid response to this Ferraro disaster, you may sincerely think you are disenthralling an enchanted media, and righting an unfair advance bestowed on Senator Obama.

You may think the matter has closed with Representative Ferraro's bitter, almost threatening resignation.

But in fact, Senator, you are now campaigning, as if Barack Obama were the Democrat, and you. . . were the Republican.

As Shakespeare wrote, Senator - that way. . . madness. . . lies.

You have missed a critical opportunity to do. . . what was right.

EXHAUSTIVE REVIEW FINDS NO LINK BETWEEN SADDAM AND AL QAIDA

031108_un_hang.jpg

An exhaustive review of more than 600,000 Iraqi documents that were captured after the 2003 U.S. invasion has found no evidence that Saddam Hussein's regime had any operational links with Osama bin Laden's al Qaida terrorist network.

The Pentagon-sponsored study, scheduled for release later this week, did confirm that Saddam's regime provided some support to other terrorist groups, particularly in the Middle East, U.S. officials told McClatchy. However, his security services were directed primarily against Iraqi exiles, Shiite Muslims, Kurds and others he considered enemies of his regime.

The new study of the Iraqi regime's archives found no documents indicating a "direct operational link" between Hussein's Iraq and al Qaida before the invasion, according to a U.S. official familiar with the report.

President Bush and his aides used Saddam's alleged relationship with al Qaida, along with Iraq's supposed weapons of mass destruction, as arguments for invading Iraq after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Then-Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld claimed in September 2002 that the United States had "bulletproof" evidence of cooperation between the radical Islamist terror group and Saddam's secular dictatorship.

Then-Secretary of State Colin Powell cited multiple linkages between Saddam and al Qaida in a watershed February 2003 speech to the United Nations Security Council to build international support for the invasion. Almost every one of the examples Powell cited turned out to be based on bogus or misinterpreted intelligence.

As recently as last July, Bush tried to tie al Qaida to the ongoing violence in Iraq. "The same people that attacked us on September the 11th is a crowd that is now bombing people, killing innocent men, women and children, many of whom are Muslims," he said.

IS THE CLOCK NOW RUNNING ON IRAN?

031108_adm_fallon.jpg

I found this little item the other day.

"Bush May Fire CentCom Chief Adm. Fallon, Replace With Commander More 'Pliable' To War With Iran."

Defense Secretary Robert Gates has called CENTCOM commander Adm. William Fallon "one of the best strategic thinkers in uniform today." Fallon opposed the "surge" in Iraq and has consistently battled the Bush administration to avoid a confrontation with Iran, calling officials' war-mongering "not helpful." Privately, he has vowed that an attack on Iran "will not happen on my watch."

Admiral Fallon committed a mortal sin. . . he disagreed with the president.

Well as it turns out Bush didn't have to fire him he retired on his own (wink, wink).

All I've got to say is that John McCain needs to get warmed up for his hit tune "BOMB, BOMB, BOMB, BOMB IRAN"

COUNTRYWIDE'S MOZILO RESISTED PAY CUTS

There never is enough money for most of these guys.

Angelo Mozilo resisted advice from some outside consultants who sought to scale back his often-criticized pay and perquisites as chairman and chief executive officer at Countrywide Financial Corp., according to a report by a House committee.

Mr. Mozilo received total compensation of nearly $250 million for 1998 through 2007 and collected an additional $406 million from the sale of Countrywide stock, the report says.

The report says two compensation consultants hired in recent years urged the board to cut back on certain aspects of Mr. Mozilo's compensation. "It's unfortunate in retrospect that the company did not follow all of our recommendations,"

I read that the FBI has now opened an investigation into Countrywide. More to follow.

DON'T MAKE ME STOP THIS CAR

This weekend I thought alot about how I felt about this primary election. I recalled that up until early December I hadn't made up my mind who I wanted. All I knew for sure was that we had a very large slate of highly qualified candidates and I would be happy to vote for anyone of them.

That was then this is now.

As I said I've thought about this all weekend and decided that I had to take a stand so I wrote the following letter to Hillary saying how I feel about the out and out lies, half truths, creative editing, innuendo, smears and attack ads against Obama. I can tell you I'm not happy.

Here is the e-mail I just sent to Hillary Clinton and a copy to Barack Obama.

AN OPEN LETTER TO HILLARY CLINTON:

Up until early December 2007, Dec 8th to be exact I wasn't sure who I would vote for in our primary election and later the general election in November 2008. I just knew that regardless of who became our nominee the democrats had a slate that would be very easy to support and more importantly vote for.

I was wrong.

I can't give you the exact reason that I made up my mind that December day and as I said I could be happy with any one of our candidates. But in life we have to make choices regardless of how hard they are.

The choice is rarely based on only one reason but a series of reasons leading up to that final time that you make your choice. This primary season has shown us one thing that many people can only make that decision once they get in that voting booth and must make their choice. I'm not that way I like to watch, listen and think about things.

I will sit at my kitchen table drinking a cup of coffee and reading a book, a news paper or something I printed from the internet. I enjoy the effort to try to get to what it is that makes me feel good about who I want to support. In my case it's Barack Obama.

Again I want to restate that for the longest time I've felt I could and would support anyone that the democrats nominate it would be a "slam dunk". Now I'm not so sure.

In the past several weeks Hillary Clinton and her campaign has decided that it's OK to go negative against Barack. Doing it by innuendo, smears, attack ads and out and out lies.

Hillary, you said in some of your rallies that Barack "used words", "ONLY WORDS" well that's exactly what you are doing and sometimes it's not so much what you say, but rather how you say it and what you don't say. Words do matter.

Saying that "as far as you know Barack is a Christian" you imply some doubt by that answer. A simple YES HE IS was the correct answer. I think that your answer was done to raise FEAR and DOUBT.

You or your team spread lies about this NAFTA Memo/leak from Canada.

You say that John McCain and you have the experience to be commander in chief and Barack Obama only has a speech. You ran an attack ad about a 3 am call suggesting you are the only one that can answer that call suggesting that Barack wasn't, yet when asked what gives you this experience you are silent. Your vote to give George Bush the authority to go to war tells me you lack GOOD JUDGEMENT and your experience hasn't changed that POOR JUDGEMENT.

You have decided that by playing dirty (business as usual in Washington speak) you can win. I say NO YOU CAN'T. If you STEAL this primary election I will vote for John McCain.

FOR ME, YOU WILL BE GRABBING DEFEAT FROM THE JAWS OF VICTORY.

6-STEP DEBT-ELIMINATION PROGRAM Part 6 of 6

031009_bank_rate6.jpg

By Cheryl Allebrand - Bankrate.com

Over the past 5 or 6 days I've captured that days interest rate for various mortage loans. I think it's very interesting to note how it has fluctauated everyday.

Just as an aside I noticed that the interest rate canges daily. Here are the 6 daily rates from this series: 1= 5.88, 2= 5.80, 3= 5.82, 4= 5.90, 5= 6.03 and 6= 6.12

This is the last part on getting out of debt.

6. Seek counsel

If you don't have the time or know-how to get results on your own, turn to a good credit counseling company rather than stalling or feeling frustrated by ineffectual attempts at vague behavioral changes.

"Once you're in debt and you're in a position where you can't save, it's almost impossible to get out from it," Viale says.

A consultation with a good credit counselor takes an hour or so -- you can even phone in. A credit counselor can get you on a budget or refer you to other options.

    Signs that you need help:
  1. - You're over the limit on any of your accounts.
  2. - You've missed a payment.
  3. - After budgeting, you can't pay more than the minimum.
  4. - You're behind on your debt.
Good credit counseling agencies construct an individualized budget and repayment plan for free. For less than the penalty fees you might already be facing, a credit counseling agency can put you on a debt management program and intervene on your behalf.

Working with a counseling agency may also help you negotiate with creditors, making them more likely to reduce high rates, waive fees going forward and offer other concessions.

"We're the validation tool, and once we've determined that someone needs some help from the creditors, negotiations with the credit card companies are a lot easier," Viale says.

"We can get the consumer out of debt for less than it would cost on their own."

Watch out for bad agencies that charge more but don't do a lot of the intervention work and counseling necessary to construct a good plan. Find a reputable agency through your local Better Business Bureau or state licensing department. The banking department of each state will have a list of all the accredited agencies in that state.

If you're struggling with debt, don't wait too long before asking for help.

"Unfortunately, many consumers come to us too late and we have to recommend they speak with a bankruptcy attorney," Viale says.

They don't want to talk about the past because their judgment was so terribly wrong then. Without learning from mistakes of the past they are bound to make them again in the future. It's called good judgment.

Ever notice how on TV they make things sound like we are about to be hit by a Tsunami. Take for example this back and forth between Obama and Clinton. As you listen to the Talking Heads talk you just get the feeling that these two groups are about to start a world war. It’s not only funny it’s stupid.

6-STEP DEBT-ELIMINATION PROGRAM Part 5 of 6

030708_bank_rate4.jpg

By Cheryl Allebrand - Bankrate.com

Is debt overwhelming your finances? If you have nightmarish visions of being surrounded by creditors, it's time to put down all credit cards, tighten the proverbial belt and start living not only within your means, but under them until you've paid back what you owe.

Take control of your debt and commit to the following strategies so you can start using credit to get ahead, rather than always playing catch-up.

Seize control of your debt by following these steps.

5. Improve your terms

Creditors may waive fees, reduce interest rates or agree to more flexible repayment terms. All you have to do is ask. Knowing how to ask is important, though.

Buy some breathing room

Options for improving your terms vary depending on the type of debt.

    Student loans:
  1. - Deferment: postpones payment.
  2. - Forbearance: temporary reduction in payments.
  3. - Loan forgiveness programs allow you to work in exchange for reduction in student loan debt.
    Mortgage:
  1. - Call the loss mitigation department if you are behind on your mortgage. You may be able to get your mortgage modified and add the missed payments on to the end of the loan.
  2. - Try to sell your home before it goes into foreclosure. In extreme cases, the lender may agree to a short sale.
    Medical:
  1. - If your debt is due to a lack of health insurance, ask for an itemized bill for your medical charges and look for duplicate charges or services you never received. Make sure all the charges are accurate before asking for a payment plan.
    Credit card:
  1. - Negotiate interest rates and fees.
  2. - Request a financial hardship plan that lowers the interest rate and the minimum payment amount for a year.
Your chances of successfully negotiating with creditors increase greatly if you have a "deal breaker," such as another creditor willing to take on your debt at better terms.

Scott Bilker wrote a book about negotiating with creditors: "Talk Your Way Out of Credit Card Debt." He claims an 80 percent success rate using the methods outlined in his book.

"Pretty much everything is negotiable. Those banks want to keep us."

The better your credit, the more you'll be able to save; however, no matter how bad your credit has been, you'll often be able to make some improvement.

    Bilker's tips
  1. - Have a deal breaker. Tell the creditor what you'll do if they don't give you the deal. For instance, refer to a low-rate credit offer from another bank that you received in the mail.
  2. - Be persistent. When you call, they put you on hold. If the first person can't help you, ask to speak to supervisor. Keep calling back until someone helps you.
  3. - Have confidence. Remember that you're in control. Be prepared and know what you've spent on your account.
You may even negotiate down debt amounts if you demonstrate your dedication to repayment.

If you feel uncomfortable negotiating, let a more confident friend or family member intervene on your behalf. Make sure to get all agreements in writing. You may have even greater success with the help of a credit counseling service.

Sometimes the best way to improve your terms is to take matters into your own hands.

Consumer credit expert Gerri Detweiler suggests a system of continuous balance transfers to get the best rates while hacking away at debt.

"It's not a solution, just a tactic to lower your interest rate," she says. "You still have to focus on getting your balance paid off. But the lower your interest rate, the faster the process will be."

This process works even for those with less-than-stellar credit, just not as well.

"You may not get the 2.99 percent offers," she says. "But as long as you're reducing it from 25 percent to 15 percent, that's significant progress."

There's normally a fee for balance transfers, usually about 3 percent of the transfer or amount of the check. It's all in the fine print, so make sure you understand the details and factor that in when deciding if it's a good deal for you.

Remember that creditors will apply your payments to the amount with the lowest interest rate first, so to get the most from the transfer, you really need to steer clear of new purchases. Also, be on the lookout for other balance transfer trip-ups.

6-STEP DEBT-ELIMINATION PROGRAM Part 4 of 6

030608_bank_rate4.jpg

By Cheryl Allebrand - Bankrate.com

Is debt overwhelming your finances? If you have nightmarish visions of being surrounded by creditors, it's time to put down all credit cards, tighten the proverbial belt and start living not only within your means, but under them until you've paid back what you owe.

Take control of your debt and commit to the following strategies so you can start using credit to get ahead, rather than always playing catch-up.

Seize control of your debt by following these steps.

4. Pay more than the minimum

Do you understand how much you're paying if you only make minimum payments or how long it will take you to repay your debt?

It is crucial to pay down more than the minimum each month. If you can't afford to pay down more than the minimum, sit down to figure out where you can save more. Leave no stone unturned.

Harrine Freeman learned to make deep cuts during drastic times. Tired of creditor harassment, Freeman slashed her spending to the bone to get out from under $19,000 of credit card debt.

"I didn't go out to eat, I took my lunch to work, I took public transportation, I didn't buy any new clothes or shoes and I got a part-time second job," she says. "All of those things helped me to start paying down my debt."

It took four years to fully repay her debts, but she now has decent credit and only carries mortgage debt. Her experience prompted her to open H.E. Freeman Enterprises, a personal finance services company, in Washington, D.C.

Taking control of debt doesn't necessarily require an all-or-nothing approach and not all of Freeman's advice is so extreme.

"If you spend $300 a month going out to eat, try to reduce that to $150 and use the other $150 to pay down debt," says Freeman, whose experience paying down debt inspired her book, "How to Get Out of Debt: Get an 'A' Credit Rating for Free Using the System I've Used Successfully with Thousands of Clients."

6-STEP DEBT-ELIMINATION PROGRAM Part 3 of 6

030508_bank_rate3.jpg

By Cheryl Allebrand o Bankrate.com Is debt overwhelming your finances? If you have nightmarish visions of being surrounded by creditors, it's time to put down all credit cards, tighten the proverbial belt and start living not only within your means, but under them until you've paid back what you owe.

Take control of your debt and commit to the following strategies so you can start using credit to get ahead, rather than always playing catch-up.

Seize control of your debt by following these steps.

3. Set aside some savings

While it may seem counterintuitive, saving is a crucial aspect of a sound strategy to pay down debt. If you have three to six months of living expenses saved up, you're golden; otherwise, build an emergency savings buffer while paying down your debt.

"The No. 1 problem we see consumers fall subject to is when someone is good-intentioned and wants to pay their debt down, they put every dollar toward it and as soon as an unexpected expense happens, they find themselves using credit again," Viale says.

Think about it: If you're in debt, it could take you years to get out. During that time, you are bound to face an unexpected expense or setback. A savings cushion can keep you from falling back into the deficit-spending cycle.

"We see consumers who are doing really well paying their debt down, then they get to the holidays and charge things because they don't have any savings," Viale says. "They see that they've been good all year and have been paying it down, so they figure they can pick up again next year. Well, it doesn't get any better -- it's a trend that just continues."

After paying your minimums, put half of any extra money into savings and half into paying down debt.

Boost your income

Once you've checked for coins under the couch cushions, try looking at these places for additional income:

  1. - Ask for a raise.
  2. - Get a second job or work overtime.
  3. - Use your tax refund to pay down some of your debt.
  4. - If you have plenty in savings, apply a portion to debt.
  5. - Rent out a room.
  6. - Sell anything you haven't used in a year on eBay or hold a garage sale.
  7. - Move in with family, at a lower rent.
Don't sit on too fat a cushion if debt is a problem for you, Bilker says.

"If you save the money, you're going to get 4 percent interest -- and you'll only see interest that good if you've got an online money market," he says. "On your cards, you're paying 20 percent. No way does it make sense to earn interest at 4 percent while you're paying 20 percent."

GIVE THEM THE MONEY FOR THIS RAY GUN Part 1 of 2

This past 60 Minutes Show was one of the best of the season. They did the Health Care in America that we talked about the past two days. Well this time it's about a piece of military equipment that seems like a great idea and it doesn't kill or injure anyone.

What PISSES me off is that we can try and spend some $398 million on a stupid Bridge To Nowhere but they won't fully fund this equipment.

Watch this video and you'll be scratching your head too.

6-STEP DEBT-ELIMINATION PROGRAM Part 2 of 6

030408_bank_rate2.jpg

By Cheryl Allebrand o Bankrate.com Is debt overwhelming your finances? If you have nightmarish visions of being surrounded by creditors, it's time to put down all credit cards, tighten the proverbial belt and start living not only within your means, but under them until you've paid back what you owe.

Take control of your debt and commit to the following strategies so you can start using credit to get ahead, rather than always playing catch-up.

Seize control of your debt by following these steps.

2. Create a plan

Now that you know where you stand, take a short self-inventory to determine the appropriate repayment plan.

There are two main approaches to paying off debt.

2 ways to pay off debt: - High to low. You pay off the card with the highest interest rate first. This gets the most out of every cent you send. - Big to small. You pay off the card with the biggest balance first, regardless of interest rate. This creates big results fast, but may not be the best bang for your buck.

A simple example illustrates how each approach works. Let's say you can afford to pay down $1,000 worth of debt each month. You have 10 cards and the minimum payment due on each of your accounts is $50, for a total of $500.

Regardless of which approach you choose, you pay $50 on nine of the cards, for a total of $450. That leaves you with $550 to apply to your remaining debt.

Using the high-to-low, approach, you would apply the remaining $550 to the card with the highest rate. Using the big-to-small approach, you would apply the remaining $550 to the card with the biggest balance, regardless of interest rate.

"Either method is effective, it just depends on what type of consumer you are," says Christopher Viale, president of Cambridge Credit Counseling Corp.

"Knowing your own style is the most important thing because if you come out of your style, you're not going to stick with it."

Whatever method you use, don't forget to apply a little common sense to your calculations, says Scott Bilker, creator of debtsmart.com.

"You'll hear a lot of experts say you should pay off the one with the lowest balance first," he says. "But that doesn't work out very well if the lowest balance happens to be zero percent and the highest balance is 20 percent. Why on earth would you want to focus on the zero-percent card first?"

Once you've settled on a plan, take a minute to put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard) and write down your goals: How much will you devote each month to paying back debt? How much will you save? What are your other financial goals?

"If you put it in writing, you're more likely to get where you want to be," says debt expert Gerri Detweiler. "Part of what I researched for my master's degree was financial psychology, and the research tends to show that those who write down and monitor those goals are more likely to get there."

HEALTH CARE IN AMERICA - PART 2 of 2

030208_60_health.jpg

This is part 2 of the 60 Minutes program that was on the other night discussing Health Care in America. It was an eye opener and something that both Hillary and Barack have been talking about all year long. Have you heard anything from the republicans about Health Care? I don't think so.

What is surprising and shocking is that this medical service was done by an all volunteer group of doctors and nurses. It was amazing, heart tugging to think that there are so many that care.

It is the kind of thing that you think of happening in some Third World country but this was in the United States of America.

Watch this video, it'll blow your mind.

BUSH IN A BUBBLE! ! ! President Bush didn't know that the price of gas is headed to $4.00 per gallon.

A LIE is a LIE and that's what it should be called.

This is true: I heard a women call into the Stephanie Miller show the other day and she said that people should be voting for Hillary because she knows where everything is, for example the bathroom. I swear to God that's the truth.

Where does FOX NOISE get their SO CALLED Democratic Strategists? I've notice for a long time that these folks seem to agree with the Host like Bill O'Reilly most of the time unlike the republican guest on a liberal show where they will never agree with the host. Barack Obama still has to fight off the LIES AND BULLSHIT. It's hard to understand how this CRAP still is out there because I know they ALL have been shot down months ago. Is it just that many Americans are just STUPID? I mean think about it these people hear the LIE but for some reason they never hear the correction. . . why is that. (See the 60 Minutes video below.)

GET OUT OF DEBT

030308_credit_card.jpg

For most of my adult life I have not been good at handling money. I always felt that if you make a buck you should spend two. Savings or paying off that credit card was not something I was interested in do. The only thing I did right was that I only had two credit cards and one my American Express I had to pay off the balance each month. That guy didn't get a whole lot of use in my house.

I didn't read much about managing money and there weren't many shows like Suze Orman on TV so I just did my thing not thinking about tomorrow. I grew up in a poor family and saving money was not an option or even something we talked about. I don't mean that to sound like an excuse or that I'm blaming my folks, because I'm not. . . it's just the way it was.

Thank God the last 5 or so years of my working life I got some "religion" and paid off all my credit debts, replaced my roof, painted my house and did some stuff around the yard which I paid off before I actually retired.

Since retirement I pay my credit card balance off at the end of each month and sometimes it really, really hurts if I good a little nuts on buying something. I've been doing better in that regard the last few months.

Today the credit card companies and congress have joined forces to make it hard for you to get out of debt if you pay the minimum balance. When I was doing my credit card thing all those years the interest rate while high was not at the level they are now. Also these BASTARDS changed the Bankruptcy law a few years ago and it makes it almost impossible to get out of debt via bankruptcy.

I say all this as a lead in to this 6 part series called "6-STEP DEBT-ELIMINATION PROGRAM" that I saw at Bankrate.com the other day. It's a good article and well worth your time.

6-STEP DEBT-ELIMINATION PROGRAM

022908_bankrate_1.jpg

By Cheryl Allebrand o Bankrate.com

Is debt overwhelming your finances? If you have nightmarish visions of being surrounded by creditors, it's time to put down all credit cards, tighten the proverbial belt and start living not only within your means, but under them until you've paid back what you owe.

Take control of your debt and commit to the following strategies so you can start using credit to get ahead, rather than always playing catch-up.

Seize control of your debt by following these steps.

Six steps to debt relief

  1. 1. Know where you stand
  2. 2. Create a plan
  3. 3. Set aside some savings
  4. 4. Pay more than the minimum
  5. 5. Improve your terms
  6. 6. Seek counsel

1. Know where you stand

Ignorance may be bliss, but it won't solve your problems. The only way to get out of a debt predicament is to know how beholden you are to creditors.

Where are you starting from? Look honestly, as painful as it may be, at how much you currently owe.

It's stunning how many people are afraid to take this step, says Michael McAuliffe, president of Family Credit Counseling Service.

"The majority of people I speak with, when we sit down and add up their debt, have no idea how much they owe," he says. "I have people say, 'No that can't be right, add it up again.'

"It's no mistake, it's how much you owe, and they're absolutely shocked."

Once you've tallied your debt, add up your income and subtract fixed expenses. The amount leftover is money for discretionary spending and paying down debt.

Now that you know where you are, stop. Stop using your credit cards. End the debt cycle so that every move from now on carries you forward.

"Decide to live off what you make, only have a debit card," says McAuliffe. "That is where we see the biggest resistance from people -- even people who are past-due on half their credit cards.

"The real key is not to rely on credit cards again, because if you're mismanaging credit, you have to look at it as an addiction. Because that's really what it is."
