THE TRUTH PART 3 OF 3

GlobelWarming_012807.jpg

This is the third of a three part series of a conversation about Global Warming by the producer of "An Inconvenient Truth". Listen to how the lobbist have gotten into the schools via a teachers organization. It isn't just Washington D.C.

Ahead of a major scientific report on global warming to be released this week, David Brancaccio talks with Laurie David, a producer of the Oscar-nominated documentary "An Inconvenient Truth" and a major environmental activist.

Ms. David levels direct charges against those she feels stand in the way of her mission to alert the world about the dangers of climate change, and says America needs to lead the world in protecting the planet.

"People are finally understanding the urgency of the issue. And I think they're starting to look at what they can do," David tells NOW. "But now we have to get government to change. I mean we have to take a leadership role."

Gary Ater wrote to Bill O'Reilly:

"How can the spin be stopping on the O'Reilly Factor when all we hear about is the far-left? Why do we not hear about the far-right?"

O'Reilly replied

"Fair question, sir. Far right's been marginalized in this country. The establishment press ignores them and there are few elected officials who fit that profile. So there's not much going on in far-rightville. If there were, we would tell you about it."

I found this on the WEB at News Hounds.

NEWS HOUNDS: <----( click here to go to the site )

New York, we have a problem. FEW elected officials? Granted a bunch of them got fired in November, but there are still quite a few remaining, and the former officials were never identified (with a sneer) as "far-right." And there has never - NEVER - been a segment on the O'Reilly Factor that used the term "far-right" eight times in six minutes, excoriating people of that particular political leaning.

Lets see, who's far right? (Besides all the stars at FOX : John Gibson, Brit Hume, Neil Cavuto, the crew at FOX and Friends, Sean Hannity, yes, Bill O'Reilly)... their guests! Ann Coulter, Dennis Miller, Ollie North, Bill Cowan, David Hunt, Michelle Malkin, Danny Bonaduce, Dick Morris, Wendy Murphy, Neal Boortz, Michael Savage, Mike Gallagher, Mary Matalin, Bill Bennett, G Gordon Liddy, Pat Robertson, James Dobson, Fred Barnes, Frederick Kagan, Charles Krauthammer, Bill friggin Kristol, for crying out loud...

As for elected officials, start at the top: Dick Cheney, Bush, Karl Rove, Condi Rice, Don Rumsfeld, Richard Perle, Paul Wolfowitz, John Bolton, anyone recycled from Nixon's or Bush Sr's administration, PNAC signers, Rick Santorum, Sam Brownback, Matt and Roy Blunt, Jeb Bush, George Voinovich, Ted Stevens, Pat Roberts, James Inhofe, Kay Bailey Hutchinson, Mitch McConnell, Kit Bond, Norm Coleman, Jim Talent, Bill Frist, come aaaahn, as O'Reilly would say.

No spin? Gotcha!

YOU GOTTA LOVE THAT FAIR AND BALANCED BULL.

MORE SPIN

BO_memo_013007.jpg On his show the other night Bill O'Reilly started his show as he always does with his Memo segment. The subject of the memo was the Impeachment of Bush but Billy had to add another denial that he called for a Boycott of Vermont.

Watch the video and then see the below taken from the FOX NEWS WEB site of the transcript from the MEMO segement where he first called for a boycott.

If he wasn't calling for a boycott I don't know what he was doing.

Click here. <----( watch the video here )

In Vermont, there are no mandatory sentencing laws for child rapists. And there are no public demonstrations against Judge Cashman.

Where are activists Ben & Jerry, the ice cream guys who constantly scream about human rights? Where is former Governor Howard Dean? Senators Jeffords and Leahy? Where is socialist Congressman Bernie Sanders? Surely, he cares about the victim's rights.

Our billoreilly.com poll question asks if Judge Cashman is not removed from criminal cases, will you boycott Vermont? If Judge Cashman is not removed from criminal cases, will you boycott Vermont?

Unfortunately, that's what it might take -- action by the rest of the country to wake the state up.

And that's "The Memo."

I WONDER WHY

Libby_012307.jpg Why don't I see the Scooter Libbey trial reported on the FOX NOISE Channel? I see reports throughout the day on CNN, MSNBC, CNBC and Headline News. But nothing on the FOX NOISE Channel. I'll admit that I don't stay on FOX for long but you would think I'd see one or two mentions about it in a couple of days of channel surfing.

I've seen the Sandy Berger non story at least 3 times today alone. I've seen them slamming Jane Fonda at least that many times. The ABC 9/11 report has been on twice that I saw. But no Libbey. I wonder why.

HOW THEY CAN LIE

Speaking of the Libbey story, I've seen some of the Talking Heads still saying that Joe Wilson lied about Cheney sending him to Niger. That it was his wife Valerie Plame that sent him.

HERE IS WHAT JOE WILSON ACTUALLY SAID:

For 23 years, from 1976 to 1998, I was a career foreign service officer and ambassador. In 1990, as charge d'affaires in Baghdad, I was the last American diplomat to meet with Saddam Hussein. (I was also a forceful advocate for his removal from Kuwait.) After Iraq, I was President George H. W. Bush's ambassador to Gabon and Sao Tome and Principe; under President Bill Clinton, I helped direct Africa policy for the National Security Council.

It was my experience in Africa that led me to play a small role in the effort to verify information about Africa's suspected link to Iraq's nonconventional weapons programs. Those news stories about that unnamed former envoy who went to Niger? That's me.

In February 2002, I was informed by officials at the Central Intelligence Agency that Vice President Dick Cheney's office had questions about a particular intelligence report. While I never saw the report, I was told that it referred to a memorandum of agreement that documented the sale of uranium yellowcake - a form of lightly processed ore - by Niger to Iraq in the late 1990's. The agency officials asked if I would travel to Niger to check out the story so they could provide a response to the vice president's office.

After consulting with the State Department's African Affairs Bureau (and through it with Barbro Owens-Kirkpatrick, the United States ambassador to Niger), I agreed to make the trip. The mission I undertook was discreet but by no means secret. While the C.I.A. paid my expenses (my time was offered pro bono), I made it abundantly clear to everyone I met that I was acting on behalf of the United States government.

So he didn't lie and it's now almost 4 years later and these Talking Heads are still using the same lie spin even after they have been shown to be the ones that are lying. Just like Dick Cheney that claims he never said something even though it's on tape. Go figure.

Finally, I don't get how all these smart guys think. I don't get how saying Ms. Plame was the one that recommended her husband be sent on this trip changed anything. It just seems silly and really stupid.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

Sen. Joe Biden (D-DE): "It's not the American people or the U.S. Congress who are emboldening the enemy. It's the failed policy of this president going to war without a strategy, going to war prematurely."

THE OBAMA MADRASSA HOAX

JonathanAlter.jpg

By Jonathan Alter - Newsweek

What will the first full week of Campaign '08 be remembered for? That Barack Obama was under attack for his behavior as a 6-year-old. It's worth revisiting the Madrassa Hoax story for what it tells us about our warp-speed politics.

The subtext of the story was that Obama was some kind of Muslim Manchurian Candidate (or the Russian spy played by Kevin Costner in "No Way Out")—trained in an Indonesian religious school to be a jihadist who would do Al Qaeda's work from within. Under the old media order, the whole thing would have made for a nice joke amid the somber mood surrounding President Bush's State of the Union address. But this is a different time, when every campaign lives in fear of being Swift-Boated. Even after the story was debunked, the folks at Fox News Channel wouldn't apologize, and in one case kept pushing a line on the air they knew was false.

The pathetic little saga begins on the Web site of Insight Magazine, a scandal sheet connected to the Rev. Sun Myung Moon's Washington Times. On Jan. 17, Insight reported that "Hillary Rodham Clinton's camp" had conducted a background check that found Obama attended a madrassa (religious seminary) when he moved with his mother and stepfather to Jakarta in the late 1960s. The idea, according to Insight, was to show that Obama was deceptive about his "Muslim past." Clinton spokesman Howard Wolfson says flatly: "They made it up."

True or not, this bit of grade-school innuendo proved irresistible to Steve Doocy, know-it-all host of "Fox and Friends," Roger Ailes's idea for a right-wing morning chat show. Doocy garbled the story into a reference to Obama "spending the first decade of his life raised by a Muslim father." After John Gibson of Fox repeated this yarn, which managed to slime two campaigns simultaneously, CNN dispatched a reporter to Obama's old school in Jakarta, where he revealed it to be a normal public school with religion classes only once a week and no indication of Wahhabism, the Saudi-inspired extremist philosophy. (Indonesian schools were even more secular 40 years ago than they are today.) The whole underlying tale was untrue.

But neither this solid reporting—later backed up by ABC News—nor a categorical statement from the Obama campaign that he "has never been a Muslim, was not raised a Muslim and is a committed Christian who attends the United Church of Christ in Chicago," killed the story. Fox was "unwilling to stop when they knew they were wrong or correct what they knew was a lie," says Robert Gibbs, Obama's communications director. Executives at the network claimed that their on-air "clarification" was enough, but Fox's own people didn't get the message. Gibson—once a respected correspondent and host—went on the radio to malign the CNN reporter, John Vause. He "probably went to the very [same] madrassa" as Obama, Gibson said.

On one level, the story ended up being a net positive for Obama. His supporters were glad he fought back hard, and the emphasis on his church attendance (he committed to Christ in his 20s) may help soften the concern about his troublesome middle name, "Hussein"—a family name given him by his atheist father, a Kenyan academic whom Obama met only once in his life. Even though Fox wouldn't apologize, at least the falsity of the story was not in doubt. The problem for the Obama team is that other such stories might not lend themselves as readily to being shot down. Without being black and white, they fester in gray. And where Hillary Clinton's vulnerabilities are all a decade or so old, Obama's are new. He's so green he deserves—and will receive—more scrutiny than politicians who've been around for a while. So even when the charges are false, they are imbued with a patina of "news" that will not apply to stories about Rose Law firm billing records or cattle futures. Generally speaking, being fresh is an advantage in politics. But it makes any critical story fresh, too, when stale might be easier to squelch.

Political operatives on all sides are worried about the new rules governing their world. "We used to whine about round-the-clock cable in '96—that's child's play now," says Harold Ickes, a longtime Clinton aide getting ready to help Hillary. "The lesson of Swift Boat [the 2004 efforts to throw mud on John Kerry over his Vietnam service on a river craft] is you cannot let this stuff circulate unanswered." The implications for opposition research are only now coming into view. "If they [bloggers] can finger you trying to drop poison into the well, you'll be hurt by it," Ickes adds. "Stuff moves out so quickly that campaigns have to exercise much more control over their negative information apparatus." This could be good. When "oppo" goes transparent, it might shrivel.

Until then, the hostilities will escalate. Last week, Joe Novak, a Chicago media consultant with a longtime rivalry with David Axelrod, Obama's campaign chief, launched a Web site dedicated to trashing Obama. (One of his first hits was on Michelle Obama for sitting on the board of a pickle company that closed a plant recently.) Meanwhile, Dick Morris, the former Clinton operative turned Hillary hater, is working on a dirt-filled documentary. Unless the Clintons' courtship of Rupert Murdoch bears fruit quickly, it'll no doubt be Doocy'ed for Fox viewers as soon as it's released.

GREAT SUNNY DAY TODAY

ONLY ONE POST TODAY

I saw this in the New York Times today and thought it tell's it as it needs to be told. Read it and see if you don't agree.

Daffy Does Doom

Mdowd_012707.jpg

By MAUREEN DOWD

Dick Durbin went to the floor of the Senate on Thursday night to denounce the vice president as "delusional."

It was shocking, and Senator Durbin should be ashamed of himself.

Delusional is far too mild a word to describe Dick Cheney. Delusional doesn't begin to capture the profound, transcendental one-flew-over daftness of the man.

Has anyone in the history of the United States ever been so singularly wrong and misguided about such phenomenally important events and continued to insist he's right in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary?

It requires an exquisite kind of lunacy to spend hundreds of billions destroying America's reputation in the world, exhausting the U.S. military, failing to catch Osama, enhancing Iran's power in the Middle East and sending American kids to train and arm Iraqi forces so they can work against American interests.

Only someone with an inspired alienation from reality could, under the guise of exorcising the trauma of Vietnam, replicate the trauma of Vietnam.

You must have a real talent for derangement to stay wrong every step of the way, to remain in complete denial about Iraq's civil war, to have a total misunderstanding of Arab culture, to be completely oblivious to the American mood and to be absolutely blind to how democracy works.

In a democracy, when you run a campaign that panders to homophobia by attacking gay marriage and then your lesbian daughter writes a book about politics and decides to have a baby with her partner, you cannot tell Wolf Blitzer he's "out of line" when he gingerly raises the hypocrisy of your position.

Mr. Cheney acts more like a member of the James gang than the Jefferson gang. Asked by Wolf what would happen if the Senate passed a resolution critical of The Surge, Scary Cheney rumbled, "It won't stop us."

Such an exercise in democracy, he noted, would be "detrimental from the standpoint of the troops."

Americans learned an important lesson from Vietnam about supporting the troops even when they did not support the war. From media organizations to Hollywood celebrities and lawmakers on both sides, everyone backs our troops.

It is W. and Vice who learned no lessons from Vietnam, probably because they worked so hard to avoid going. They rush into a war halfway around the world for no reason and with no foresight about the culture or the inevitable insurgency, and then assert that any criticism of their fumbling management of Iraq and Afghanistan is tantamount to criticizing the troops. Quel demagoguery.

"Bottom line," Vice told Wolf, "is that we've had enormous successes, and we will continue to have enormous successes." The biggest threat, he said, is that Americans may not "have the stomach for the fight."

He should stop casting aspersions on the American stomach. We've had the stomach for more than 3,000 American deaths in a war sold as a cakewalk.

If W. were not so obsessed with being seen as tough, Mr. Cheney could not influence him with such tripe.

They are perpetually guided by the wrong part of the body. They are consumed by the fear of looking as if they don't have guts, when they should be compelled by the desire to look as if they have brains.

After offering Congress an olive branch in the State of the Union, the president resumed mindless swaggering. Asked yesterday why he was ratcheting up despite the resolutions, W. replied, "In that I'm the decision maker, I had to come up with a way forward that precluded disaster." (Or preordained it.)

The reality of Iraq, as The Times's brilliant John Burns described it to Charlie Rose this week, is that a messy endgame could be far worse than Vietnam, leading to "a civil war on a scale with bloodshed that will absolutely dwarf what we're seeing now," and a "wider conflagration, with all kinds of implications for the world's flow of oil, for the state of Israel. What happens to King Abdullah in Jordan if there's complete chaos in the region?"

Mr. Cheney has turned his perversity into foreign policy.

He assumes that the more people think he's crazy, the saner he must be. In Dr. No's nutty world-view, anti-Americanism is a compliment. The proof that America is right is that everyone thinks it isn't.

He sees himself as a prophet in the wilderness because he thinks anyone in the wilderness must be a prophet.

To borrow one of his many dismissive words, it's hogwash.

DRUG BUST AT BREMERTON HIGH

Bremerton Police's Special Operations Group labeled the investigation "Operation Pharmacy" after one student told police the high school was like a "pharmacy." With school permission the police entered the school and put under arrest several students for drug and weapons charges.

Bremerton police said the weapons were purchased on school district property, but not at the high school and not during school hours. None of the students had weapons on them when they were arrested.

Most of the drug purchases were within school zones or on district property, but not during school hours, police reported. Two of the students arrested are 18, while the rest are minors. Three nonstudents were also arrested recently, and six more arrests are pending, police said.

I'm not sure this should be a big surprise given the amount of drugs that are available in every city and town across this country.

The other night Frontline did a show on METH in America. They showed how this drug has spread across America. See the map.

I'm sure this is only the tip of the Iceberg here in Kitsap County.

SWIFT BOATING OF OBAMA

Barack_012607.jpg Man I'm glad to see Barack Obama fighting back against the "FOX NOTHING CHANNEL". I especially like the fact that he used the names of the LYING BASTARDS.

I don't know how they can call themselves a NEWS Channel and not check out a story any better than this. Fair and Ballanced my ASS.

Vowing not to be "Swift boated," Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., pushed back yesterday against "ludicrous" rumors reported on Fox News that he attended a radical Islamic school.

Taking on Fox hosts Steve Doocy and John Gibson by name, Obama's campaign blasted the "malicious, irresponsible charges" they aired.

"You have to take control and make sure that folks know the facts and not just these innuendos from the right-wing smear machine," said Obama spokesman Bill Burton. "We will aggressively address any charges that are leveled."

' The conservative Insight magazine reported last weekend that Obama attended a radical madrassa in Indonesia as a boy. The Fox News Channel repeated the story several times.

The Illinois Democrat, who is Christian, lived in Jakarta for a few years as a boy with his mother and stepfather. Reporters for CNN and The Associated Press went to his elementary school and found it a secular institution attended by students of all faiths.

"The notion that somehow, at the age of 6 or 7, I was being trained for something other than math, science and reading, is ludicrous," Obama said on ABC.

John Kerry, the 2004 Democratic nominee, says he regrets not fighting back when his Vietnam War record was smeared by opponents calling themselves "Swift Boat Veterans for Truth."

THE NASCAR TRACK

The Sonics need at least $300 million to build their new stadium. NASCAR wants $170 million plus. These folks have money that they haven't counted yet. But they still want the state to sweeten the pot. I don't get it.

The group that supports building the race track here has been running full page ads in The local paper The Kitsap Sun. I don't know what a full page cost but I'm pretty sure it isn't free. So that tells me these supporters are well funded. It makes it tough to put up a fight against this kind of money.

I'm sure it's the same thing in the Sonics relocation.

I don't support any of these deals where the state has to subsidize these businesses. They should fund the whole thing.

SPECIAL REPORT: TAKE BACK THE LIGHT!

Here are 66 things to think about during President Bush's State Of The Union address tonight. This is 31 to 66 reasons, I posted 1 to 30 yesterday.

31. He has insisted it's up to the generals, and then removed some of the generals who said more troops would not be necessary.

32. He has trumpeted the turning points,

33. the fall of Baghdad,

34. the death of Uday and Qusay,

35. the capture of Saddam,

36. a provisional government,

37. a charter,

38. a constitution,

39. the trial of Saddam

, 40. elections,

41. purple fingers,

42. another government,

43. the death of Saddam.

44. He has assured us we would be greeted as liberators with flowers.

45. As they stood up, we would stand down.

46. We would stay the course.

47. We were never about stay the course.

48. We would never have to go door to door in Baghdad, and last night,

49. that to gain Iraqi's trust, we would go door to door in Baghdad.

50. He told us the enemy was al Qaeda,

51. foreign fighters,

52. terrorists,

53. Baathists,

54. and now Iran and Syria.

55. The war would pay for itself.

56. It would cost 1.7 billion dollars, 100 billion, 400 billion, half a trillion.

57. Last night's speech alone cost us another 6 billion.

58. And after all of that, now it is his credibility versus that of Generals,

59. diplomats,

60. allies,

61. Democrats,

62. Republicans,

63. the Iraq Study Group,

64. past presidents,

65. voters last November

66. and the majority of the American people.

SIGN OF THE TIMES

A Mafia Godfather finds out that his bookkeeper has cheated him out of ten million bucks.

His bookkeeper is deaf. That was the reason he got the job in the first place. It was assumed that a deaf bookkeeper would not hear anything that he might have to testify about in court.

When the Godfather goes to confront the bookkeeper about his missing $10 million, he brings along his attorney, who knows sign language. The Godfather tells the lawyer, "Ask him where the 10 million bucks he embezzled from me is."

The attorney, using sign language, asks the bookkeeper where the money is. The bookkeeper signs back: "I don't know what you are talking about."

The attorney tells the Godfather: "He says he doesn't know what you're talking about."

The Godfather pulls out a pistol, puts it to the bookkeeper's temple and says, "Ask him again!" The attorney signs to the bookkeeper: "He'll kill you if you don't tell him!"

The bookkeeper signs back: "OK! You win! The money is in a brown briefcase, buried behind the shed in my cousin Enzo's backyard in Queens!"

The Godfather asks the attorney: "Well, what'd he say?"

The attorney replies: "He says you don't have the balls to pull the trigger."

I'M IN TO WIN

HillClinton_012207.jpg

With these two words "I'M IN" we find Hillary Clinton has joined with Edwards, Obama, Biden, Dodd and others.

It's the talk on all the Networks today. These talking heads have their "SPIN" down pat with words like lack of experience, divisive, he smokes, his middle name is Hussein, look at all her baggage; whitewater, husbands affair.

Rumors have surfaced this weekend about a school that Barack Obama attended when he was six years old (something he wrote about in his own book), but now they have turned up the spin to say he was enrolled by his father in one of Jakarta's Wahabbi schools. Wahabbism is the radical teaching that created the Muslim terrorists who are now waging Jihad on the industrialized world.

The truth is that Barack Obama attended both Catholic and Muslim schools as a child in Indonesia. (No evidence has been produced to document the claim that Obama ever attended a Wahhabi [i.e., "radical"] Muslim school.)

When you listen to the State Of The Union tomorrow remember that Dick Cheney is Bush's right hand man. So when look at the above 66 items on the list it's hard to tell what Bush said and what Cheney said.

I know it's not customary to use the word "LIE" but man when you have video of what you said and you still deny that you said it. . . to me that's a damn lie. Cheney has built his career on lies. Watch this video.

PICTURE OF THE DAY

BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR

Bill Clinton, Al Gore, and George W. Bush went to a fitness spa for some fun. After a stimulating, healthy lunch, all three decided to visit the men's room and they found a strange-looking gent sitting at the entrance.

He said, "Welcome to the gentleman's room. Be sure to check out our newest feature, a mirror that, if you look into it and say something truthful, you will be rewarded with your wish. But, be warned: if you say something FALSE, you will be sucked into the mirror to live in a void of nothingness for all eternity!"

The three men quickly entered and upon finding the mirror, Bill Clinton stepped up and said, "I think I'm the most intelligent of us three," and he suddenly found the keys to a brand new Bentley in his hands.

Al Gore stepped up and said, "I think I'm the most aware of the environmental problems of us three," and in an instant, he was surrounded by a pile of money to fund his next Presidential Campaign.

Excited over the possibility of finally having a wish come true, George W. Bush looked into the mirror and said, "I think...," and was promptly sucked into the mirror.

IT'S ABOUT TIME

I found this on a WEB Site called The Daily Howler ( go here ). <----( click Archives 2007 for Jan 16, 2007. )
This article talks about something that has bugged me for a long time. That is taking a SMAL, INSIGNIFICANT comment and blowing it all out of shape til it no longer has the original meaning.

They do the same thing with audio and video with what I call selective editing. They take a piece of audio/video and cut it in such a way that it changes the meaning altogether.

I wish some of the talking heads and pundits on the democratic side would stand up to these attacks and point out what was really said.

TheDailyHowler.jpg

SPECIAL REPORT: TAKE BACK THE LIGHT!

BOXER (1/11/07): The Military Times published a poll which found that only 35 percent of military members approved of the way President Bush is handling this war, and only 38 percent thought there should be more troops. So from where I sit, Madame Secretary, you are not listening to the American people. You are not listening to the military. You are not listening to the bipartisan voices from the Senate. You are not listening to the Iraq Study Group. Only you know who you are listening to, and you wonder why there is a dark cloud of skepticism and pessimism over this nation.

I think people are right to be skeptical after listening to some of the things that have been said by your administration...

Now, the issue is, Who pays the price-who pays the price? I'm not going to pay a personal price. My kids are too old, and my grandchild is too young. You're not going to pay a particular price, as I understand it, within immediate family. So who pays the price? The American military and their families, and I just want to bring us back to that fact...

Huh! The military and their families pay the price in Iraq! Boxer's insight was less than startling. But just like that, it happened again-the pseudo-con Wurlitzer swung into action. Operating in standard bad faith, spinners manufactured a troubling "scandal" from the one small part of Boxer's remarks-the part we've highlighted above.

Uh-oh! Boxer dissed Condi because she's unmarried, pseudo-con spinners were quickly asserting. Because she doesn't have any kids! Of course, this didn't exactly make perfect sense, since Boxer had said that she herself wouldn't "pay the price" in Iraq, just as Condi wouldn't be paying it. But so what! The usual suspects were soon complaining about Boxer's deeply troubling insult to Rice. (Big-name example tomorrow.) But so it has gone for the past fifteen years as a clownish noise machine has made a vast joke of our public discourse. So it has gone for the past fifteen years as this brainless noise machine has made a vast joke of Americans' lives.

We have become the joke-and the scourge-of the world because of our fake, phony discourse.

How dumb was the "scandal" ginned up from this comment? Let's put it this way: Even Fred Hiatt could see right through it, writing in the Washington Post. But for the past fifteen years, conservative spinners have engaged in this tactic. They've created absurd and pointless "scandals" out of meaningless comments and actions. Most significantly, they did so for two years during Campaign 2000, thereby sending Bush to the White House. We hold these hearings on Iraq today because the press corps behaved this way then-because our discourse was endlessly driven by phony, ginned-up pseudo-scandals.

Today, even the Hiatts can see through the flimflam; Bush's war has gone so wrong that even these pundits are now speaking up when his minions misdirect, distract, misconceive. But for the past fifteen years, our discourse has been built on misdirection-and the mainstream press has agreed not to notice. It's time for sane people to take back the discourse, as women once vowed to take back the night. But to do that, we have to get clear on what has been done to make our discourse such a joke all these years.

In the past few days, we've seen the techniques again. Do rational people plan to take back the discourse? If so, we have to take back their endless "scandals"-and we have to take back the other techniques that they've used for the past fifteen years.

TOMORROW: Take back the trivia.

WE WISH THEM FAIR WINDS AND A FOLLOWING SEA

DO WE NEED OVERSIGHT OR WHAT

I saw this in the New York Times this morning. If you are one of those that think the republicans did a good job while they were in charge you need to read this article and perhaps, just perhaps rethink that.

This article plus the following video about the TROPHY weapon I talked about on 1/11/2007 makes me crazy.

TRACKING OUTSOURCED BONANZAS

The new Congress is promising far tighter oversight of Bush administration spending programs, and few targets are more in need of scrutiny and daylight than the outsourcing of government programs to private contractors. This highly lucrative world quietly ballooned by 86 percent - to $377 billion annually - during the first five years of the Bush administration, according to Congressional estimates. Outsourced spending, on Iraq, Katrina and other bonanzas, has grown twice as fast as other discretionary spending, according to Representative Henry Waxman, the California Democrat who is chairman of the oversight and reform committee.

Mr. Waxman is fairly itching to finally map the waste, fraud and abuse in private contracting that went largely ignored by the previous Republican Congress. Taxpayers should wish him well.

In a preliminary glimpse, 118 contracts worth $745 billion were found by government auditors to be rife with questionable award procedures, mismanagement, overcharging and skimpy to nonexistent oversight. Full inquiries and public hearings are vital if the rich and shadowy world of privatization is ever to be plumbed for the scandal it is nurturing. Taxpayers have only a vague notion of what's gone on, mainly through reporting on the fantastic good fortune of Halliburton, Vice President Dick Cheney's former company, whose contracts increased a whopping 600 percent across five years as the Iraq war costs cascaded. Not incidentally, privatization has been a cash cow in stirring campaign donations from successful contractors.

According to one recent audit reported in The Washington Post, among 49 privatized contracts, three out of five were awarded noncompetitively, lacked oversight, and raised questions of legality. What's been going on out there? This question cries out for an answer from the new Congress.

As my Post on 1/11/2007 points out this weapon has been tested and yet the Army wants to wait on a system that won't be ready until at least 2011, that's five more years.

This resistance needs to be investigated. Our troops are dying while the Pentagon is trying to protect a big time contractor.

NO PASSENGER ONLY FERRY FOR KITSAP

PassOnlyFerry.jpg

I keep reading about the upcoming election on the Passenger Only Ferries and what a great deal it will be for Kitsap County. New businesses and jobs galore will surly follow a yes vote. Seems to me this is the same argument they are using to justify the NASCAR Track, don't you think.

If they truly wanted to see Kitsap boom and provide a service to ALL of Kitsap County they would get behind a Bridge/Tunnel from Kitsap to Seattle via Vashon Island.

The trip across would be under 10 minutes and Kitsap Transit could provide what it's name implies "TRANSIT SERVICE". The state could close the Bremerton Terminal and Bremerton could build more high rises in it's place.

Oh yea, there would no longer be a need for that $35 million Golden Tunnel under downtown Bremerton. Can we think of more ways to waste money in this County.

Vote no on Passenger Only Ferries on Feb 6th.

BIG MISTAKES

MISTAKES HAVE BEEN MADE. . . PRESIDENT BUSH 1/10/7

PB_011407.jpg

Listen to the exact words of President Bush. Is this the way you accept responsibility?

Click here. <----( watch the video here )

SPECIAL REPORT

CD_keitho_011407.jpg

Keith Olbermann on his Countdown Show does what he calls a Special Report. It is written in such a way that he is talking directly to the President. These reports are very good and direct. He speaks the truth that is indisputable.

Below he lays out the mistakes that where made over the past 3-4 years. Put up against what the president said above I think his accepting responsibility rings a little shallow.

Before Mr. Bush was elected, he said nation building was wrong for America. Now he says it is vital.

He said he would never put U.S. troops under foreign control. Last night he promised to embed them in Iraqi units.

He told us about WMD,

mobile labs,

secret sources,

aluminum tubes,

yellow cake.

He has told us the war in necessary because Saddam was a material threat, because of 9/11,

because of Osama bin Laden,

al Qaeda,

terrorism in general,

to liberate Iraq,

to spread freedom,

to spread democracy,

to prevent terrorism by gas price increases,

because this was a guy who tried to kill his dad,

because 439 words into that speech last night he trotted out 9/11 again.

In advocating and prosecuting this war, he passed on a chance to get Abu Musab al Zarqawi,

to get Moqtada al Sadr,

to get bin Laden.

He sent in fewer troops than the generals told him to.

He ordered the Iraqi army disbanded and the Iraqi government de-Baathified.

He shortchanged Iraqi training.

He neglected to plan for wide spread looting.

He did not anticipate sectarian violence.

He sent in troops without life-saving equipment.

He gave jobs to foreign contractors and not Iraqis.

He staffed U.S. positions there based on partisanship, not professionalism

He and his government told us America had prevailed,

mission accomplished,

the resistance was in its last throws.

He has insisted more troops were not necessary.

He has now insisted more troops are necessary.

He has insisted it's up to the generals, and then removed some of the generals who said more troops would not be necessary.

He has trumpeted the turning points,

the fall of Baghdad,

the death of Uday and Qusay,

the capture of Saddam,

a provisional government,

a charter,

a constitution,

the trial of Saddam,

elections,

purple fingers,

another government,

the death of Saddam.

He has assured us we would be greeted as liberators with flowers.

As they stood up, we would stand down.

We would stay the course.

We were never about stay the course.

We would never have to go door to door in Baghdad, and last night,

that to gain Iraqi's trust, we would go door to door in Baghdad.

He told us the enemy was al Qaeda,

foreign fighters,

terrorists,

Baathists,

and now Iran and Syria.

The war would pay for itself.

It would cost 1.7 billion dollars, 100 billion, 400 billion, half a trillion.

Last night's speech alone cost us another 6 billion.

And after all of that, now it is his credibility versus that of Generals,

diplomats,

allies,

Democrats,

Republicans,

the Iraq Study Group,

past presidents,

voters last November

and the majority of the American people.

Keith Olbermann lays out the lead up to the WAR in IRAQ and the aftermath.

WHY NO ANTI-RPG WEAPON

Israel field-tests effective anti-RPG weapon so why isn't the U.S. Army doing the same?

In September, NBC News first reported on a fierce debate within the Pentagon over an Israeli-made system that shoots rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) out of the sky. The Army seems intent on killing the system, but officials in the Office of the Secretary of Defense believe it can save American lives.

Over the last three years, U.S. commanders in Iraq have issued a series of urgent pleas for a system to counter RPGs - a favorite weapon of insurgents in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Pentagon's Office of Force Transformation (OFT) scoured the world for a solution and thought it found one in "Trophy," which was developed over the last decade in Israel.

Trophy works by scanning all directions and automatically detecting when an RPG is launched. The system then fires an interceptor - traveling hundreds of miles a minute - that destroys the RPG safely away from the vehicle.

OFT subjected Trophy to 30 tests and found it is "more than 98 percent" effective at killing RPGs. Officials then made plans to battle-test the system on some Stryker fighting vehicles headed to Iraq this year.

But the U.S. Army blocked that testing. Why? Pentagon sources tell NBC News - and internal Army documents seem to confirm - that Army officials consider Trophy a threat to their crown jewel, the $160 billion Future Combat System (FCS). Under FCS, the Army is paying Raytheon Co. $70 million to build an RPG-defense system from scratch.

"The Army is opposed to deploying a system before we assure that it's safe, effective, suitable and supportable," said Col. Donald Kotchman. "Trophy is not there yet."

In letters to Congress since our first reports, the Army says that the best proof Trophy is not ready is that the "Israeli Defense Forces have yet to integrate and field Trophy."

Brig. Gen. Amir Nir leads that effort. We asked him about claims that Trophy has not been sufficiently tested and that it's not ready to be deployed.

"It's the most mature, and it can do the job," he said. "We cannot afford waiting for the next generation."

Can Trophy handle attacks from every direction?

What does Nir say? Will Trophy be able to engage targets from all directions? "Yeah, 360 degrees," he says.

Can Trophy reload automatically? We went to Trophy's manufacturer, Rafael, to see if there is an autoloader.

"Absolutely, this is an autoloader," he said.

What's the risk to troops when Trophy intercepts an RPG?

"As far as we tested, it added at most 1 percent," says Nir. "Not a significant risk."

The Army did give us two statements, one saying, in part: "The U.S. Army is dedicated to ensuring our soldiers deploy with the best force protection capability" and is working on a system to counter RPGs.

When will that system, being built by Raytheon, be ready?

The Army previously told us it could get it to the troops in four years, by 2011, but now declines to say whether it still is on course to meet that deadline.

-- Lisa Myers & the NBC News Investigative Unit

This resistance needs to be investigated. Our troops are dying while the Pentagon is trying to protect a big time contractor.

THE K STREET PROJECT

ricksan.jpg

Are you as surprised as I am to hear that former (R-PA) Sen. Rick Santorum will soon become a lobbyist.

Now, Pennsylvania voters tossed him out of office in part because of his role heading up the GOP effort to plug Republican lobbyists up with serious corporate cash, a chunk of which went to Republican campaign coffers. The "K Street Project," it was called. Named after the street on which it appears Santorum will soon be working. -- http://talkingpointsmemo.com/

I'M TOTALLY SURPRISED.

BushEGO.jpg

Bumper004.jpg

GO FIGURE

Chev Volt.jpg

Well once again Detroit and General Motors are late to the party. GM, the company that had about 800 or so electric cars in the hands of test users a few years ago and for some reason gathered them all up and smashed them, this week unveiled the Chevrolet Volt concept car at the Motor City Auto Show.

While not a pure electric like the EV1 that GM leased to about 800 people from 1996 to 2004, the Volt relies on batteries and electric motors for nearly all of its propulsion. It can be charged at home using a household outlet and includes a tiny turbo-charged gasoline engine to help keep the batteries charged.

It's a concept rather than a working vehicle, and GM says the battery technology to make it happen is still three to five years away, but it's ``not a science-fair project,'' said Jon Lauckner, the company's vice president of global program management.

It's said that the Volt "reflects some kind of change of heart at the very highest levels of GM," said Bradley Berman, editor of hybridcars.com. "This idea of an electric car that has extended range is really smart."

I'm not one to go with the "conspiracy theory" but I could go for this one. Director Chris Paine's documentary whose film "Who Killed the Electric Car?" suggested automakers such as GM, oil companies and the government all worked to make sure electric vehicles didn't succeed.

I think it's heat from Toyota pushing to take over first place as the largest selling Automobile Company in the world that has forced GM to move in this direction. It's a little late.

BUILD A DAMN BRIDGE

BridgeTunnel.jpg

Well the vote on raising taxes to fund a Passenger Only Ferry between Bremerton, Kinston and Port Orchard is coming up in a few week (FEB).

The campaign to promote a yes vote got underway this week with an endorsement from the county commissioners.

They say this new service will bring new jobs down the road. These passenger only ferry will carry about 100 passengers each. To me this is a bit of a stretch. Sure there may be some new jobs but to suggest that it's going to be the dawning of a new day is silly.

They complain that the Washington State Ferries have not been responsive to the needs of Kitsap County which is mostly true, and act as though these passenger only ferries will solve the problem. THEY WON'T.

What is needed is a bridge/tunnel from Kitsap to Seattle via Vashon Island. It's do-able and will allow for true growth in this County.

Romo's bobble on the field-goal try with 1:19 left led to a scramble that ended 2 yards shy of the end zone and a yard short of a first down, preserving a 21-20 victory for the Seattle Seahawks in the wildest of wild-card games Saturday night.

Hasselbeck was 18-of-36 for 240 yards with two touchdowns, both to Stevens, and two interceptions, both of which resulted in Dallas field goals.

Alexander ran 24 times for 69 yards. His 20-yard burst at the end was his longest of the game.

I watched this game and all I can say is that it was a bad game. The Seahawks needed a Miracle to win this game as has been the case for most of the second half of this season.

I watch the Seahawks but to me there is very little excitement in their games. Sure you get an occlusional exciting play but they are few and far between. I think Seahawks football is boring. . . boring. . . boring.

WASHINGTON STATE LEGISLATIVE SESSION BEGINS TODAY

WashSeal.jpg Washington001.jpg

Democrats have predicted a strong budget that "invests" in school kids, health care, Puget Sound cleanup, anti-crime efforts, economic development, salary hikes for teachers and public employees, and other priorities. They have a $1.9 billion projected surplus to help balance the new budget. These will be among the top priorities when the state Legislature opens today.

The democrats have a strong majority in both houses, outnumbering the Republicans 32-17 in the Senate and 62-36 in the House. At a press briefing last week Gov. Chris Gregoire and the Democrats said Olympia should seize the moment and expand programs, particularly in education, that will help broaden the prosperity and lead to a brighter future. "This is about change," the governor said. "This is about leadership."

Also on the agenda is to look at what can be done to encourage WAL-MART to take on more of the responsibility to provide health care for their employees.

There doesn't seem to be much support for the NASCAR Track here in Kitsap County. I'm not against the Track I just don't want to FUND it. After all NASCAR is a multi billion dollar company which is enough to build any number of tracks around the country. By the way NASCAR was going to foot the total bill for the track in New York until the deal fell through. Why not here?

INCORRECT PREDICTIONS

Joe Lieberman and Ned Lamont squared off twice, giving pundits two chances to blow the call.

I think Lieberman's going down hard, not only in the primary but if he stays in it in the general.

AND ON THE SAME SHOW

Lamont going away, and he'll win the general.

I'VE GOT YOUR MAIL

IveGotMail.jpg

President Bush has quietly claimed sweeping new powers to open Americans' mail without a judge's warrant. The President asserted his new authority when he signed a postal reform bill into law on Dec. 20. Bush then issued a "signing statement" that declared his right to open people's mail under emergency.

They keep PUSHING and PUSHING don't they.

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH

TrumpVsRosie.jpg

Are you as tired of this BULLSHIT FUDE between Trump and Rosie? Maybe it was fun the first day, but I think Trump moved it up a notch or two by doing some raw name calling.

They say this is all about grabbing some headlines in advance of the upcoming season of The Apprentice.

To me Trump went over the top with his name calling. It was well out of bounds and so I've decided I won't be watching his Apprentice series this year.

Actually I made that decision last year. I've always noticed that people on this show tend to act like "kids".

I HATE COMPUTER SUPPORT

PCcomputer.jpg

The other day I talked about the problem I had being able to print a report out of Quicken 2007 after I upgraded from Quicken 2006. As I said I've been using Quicken for years and so was very surprised that I had a problem printing.

The error message said I'd find a (.bat) in the Quicken folder that if I ran it the print problem would be fixed. Well I miss read the file name and couldn't find the file.

So I called "TECH SUPPORT". As you might expect I was put on hold for the next available Technician, which took about 10 minutes (not bad). But as soon as she started talking I knew with my bad hearing I was in trouble. First she spoke very low. Then she spoke in bad English.

I told her my problem and she said I should got to the WEB site for an answer and gave me an address to use. I went to that address and it turns out I had been there earlier trying solve this problem. It didn't help then and it didn't help now.

Next I tried "LIVE CHAT". Man that was worse than Tech Support. The guy didn't have a clue what to do. He gave me a URL that didn't help. At the end of the day I spent about an hour and half between Tech Support and Live Chat with out result.

In the end I re-read the error message again. I looked closely at what it said. I noticed it said run "retorePdfDriver.Bat" all one word. I was looking for "PdfDriver.Bat". When I ran the correct file and tried to print a report in Quicken 2007 it worked. . . problem solved.

I LOVE COMPUTERS!!!

NEW WAY. . . YA THINK

MORE TO SAY

Yesterday President Bush wrote and OP-ED for the Wall Street Journal. In it he talked about working together both republicans and democrats for example he said:

Together, we have a chance to serve the American people by solving the complex problems that many don't expect us to tackle, let alone solve, in the partisan environment of today's Washington. To do that, however, we can't play politics as usual. Democrats will control the House and Senate, and therefore we share the responsibility for what we achieve.

My question is why he didn't see the need for this idea for the past 6 years. Wasn't he the UNIGHTER not the DIVEDER?
