IN MEMORY - PAM WAECHTER
WALTER CRONKITE
The other night PBS did a profile of Walter Cronkite. It reminded us all once again the great number of events that took place during his 20 some years as the anchor at CBS News.
"Walter's career curve and the curve of network television absolutely dovetailed. And, and he held that position for so long under such vastly changing circumstances ... that it seemed to most people that as they got their first television set, Walter and CBS NEWS had joined their family."
-- historian and journalist David Halberstam
He was the man who told us that President Kennedy had been assassinated.
He told us that we had put a man on the moon.
He was the man who told us that we couldn't win the war in Vietnam.
During the 20 years he anchored the evening news on CBS, Walter Cronkite became a daily presence in the American home. Building on the legacy of Edward R. Murrow, he brought CBS to the pinnacle of prestige and popularity in television news. And when he left CBS, both began to ebb away.
He was not condemned when he reported that America's deeply racist history had to change. And he was not punished in the ratings when he went to Vietnam and reported that he had seen the lies, corruption, and stalemate in that war and that it was time for us to go.
When he stated the obvious -- that the Viet Cong had no intention of giving up, and we had no intention of remaining in Vietnam for another generation -- the common sense of it stuck with the public.
Cronkite could report with disgust the Chicago police attacks on anti-war demonstrators at the 1968 Democratic convention.
And he could report with shear delight the landing of a man on the moon.
He could withstand the attacks of Vice President Spiro Agnew against the so-called "nattering nabobs of negativism" of the press by speaking eloquently not only of "freedom of the press" but also, as he emphasized, of "the important right of the people to know what their government is doing in their name." And to prove that he meant it, Cronkite picked up the WASHINGTON POST's early article on the "Watergate Caper" and made the story national news with a two-part feature on the EVENING NEWS in the fall of 1972, just a month before the election.
CBS stuck by its story and watched as Nixon self-destructed over the next two years. Cronkite reported with quiet admiration the thoughtful proceedings of the House Judiciary Committee on the Impeachment of President Nixon. And he reported Nixon's resignation with sadness. There was no gloating, nor hard feelings.
He was a professional doing his job, which he never doubted was serving the public.
Cronkite set the standards of television news when the medium was new. He was loyal to those standards, and his large audience was correspondingly loyal to him. "He seemed to me incorruptible," said director Sidney Lumet, "in a profession that was easily corruptible." It was all that Cronkite wanted -- and he achieved it.
EVER ASK YOURSELF WHY?
How cool is this. If I had one of these I'd fill it up once every three months.
Titans of the auto industry seldom go out of their way to use the word "small." They don't talk much about small cargo areas or small engines, and particularly when it comes to these SUV-loving shores, they'd rather not think about small cars and the small profits that go with them.
But "small" has been an unavoidable term lately at DaimlerChrysler (Charts). The company's ingenious Smart cars, which may or may not soon appear in a showroom near you.
The Smart, for those of you who haven't been to Europe in the past eight years, is a Mercedes sub-brand of "micro-class" cars that's currently available in virtually every Western nation except the United States.
EVER WONDER WHY THAT IS?
Mercedes just announced that it's finally bringing the Smart to America in 2008.
It get about 60 miles per gallon. Starts at about $12,500 in Europe. Yes, I agreed, it's about time. Whether or not the automakers are ready to hear it, on this sunny summer day in the U.S. of A.
It's small but I'm guessing a very large number of us don't need our 20 mpg SUV's for 95 percent of our driving trips.
Hey, it's a Mercedes right.
IT'S ALL A GAME WITH THESE BASTARDS
The House the other NIGHT voted to boost the minimum wage for the first time in nearly a decade while also permanently slashing the estate tax, a coupling that GOP leaders calculated might garner enough Senate support to become law.
House lawmakers also approved the biggest overhaul of the nation's pension laws in 30 years.
In the rush to bolster their party's accomplishments before leaving today on a five-week summer break.
Lawmakers from both parties said last night that the legislation could easily collapse in the Senate, underscoring Democratic contentions that Congress has become dysfunctional.
Democrats were incensed that the GOP leadership would couple the minimum wage hike, the first increase since 1997, with an estate tax cut that would reduce federal revenue by $268 billion over the next decade, to the overwhelming benefit of the country's richest families.
"This is beyond cynical. This is disgraceful," said Rep. Jim McGovern (D-Mass.).
"I know why you're mad," said Rep. Zach Wamp (R-Tenn.). "You've seen us really outfox you."
Can this guy be any more childish with his remarks?
The minimum wage and estate tax measure passed around 1:30 a.m., 230 to 180.
SAFETY TIP
I got this in an e-mail the other day. It's not a bad idea.
This is a really cool idea, but you need to test it first.
Next time you come home for the night and you to put your keys away, think of this: It's a security alarm system that you probably already have and requires no installation.
Start keeping your car keys next to your bed on the night stand when you go to bed at night. If you think someone is trying to get into your house, or if you hear a noise outside your house, just press the panic alarm on your car key chain.
Try testing this to see if it will go off from everywhere inside your house. Remember it will keep honking until your battery runs down or until you reset it with the button on the key fob chain.
Also test it to see if it works if you park in your driveway or garage.
If your car alarm goes off when someone is trying to break in your house, odds are the burglar or rapist won't stick around.....after a few seconds all the neighbors will be looking out their windows to see who is out there and sure enough the criminal won't want that.

Yea, and as we have all seen the REALLY GREAT JOB the President and Republicans have done with their COMPLETE AND TOTAL understanding on how to fight Terror. Can you say IRAQ.

THE H-RACER TOY CAR: FUEL-CELL POWER ARRIVES
This tiny car is more than just a toy: It's the Horizon Fuel Cell H-Racer, the smallest hydrogen-powered car in the world, and the first mass-produced fuel-cell-technology product to reach consumers. It's also a great tool for learning and teaching about alternate fuel technologies.
The H-Racer (just 16 centimeters long, about 6.5 inches) runs on a 0.3-watt hydrogen fuel-cell motor and comes with its own refueling system. The fueling station derives hydrogen from water via electrolysis, which splits the hydrogen and oxygen molecules and feeds the free hydrogen through a pump into the car, filling up the proton exchange membrane (PEM) sac; the car's only emission is water. The refueling system is powered by a small solar panel (or batteries, on a cloudy day).
The car is simple enough for a child to put together, and runs for about 3 minutes before refueling is necessary. Fortunately, refueling is part of the fun; the car's designers made most pieces transparent, so you can watch the hydrogen filling up the PEM sac.
According to Horizon Fuel Cell's vice president Taras Wankewycz, the company eventually plans to develop full-size hydrogen cars. Meanwhile, the H-Racer provides a working, tangible example what clean fuel-cell technology has to offer.
While Horizon is not a toy company, toy makers have expressed interest in integrating fuel-cell technology into there products so fuel-cell-powered remote-control cars, boats, and other toy vehicles may be offered in the future. The H-Racer is available now on the Horizon Fuel Cells Web site for $80, and should hit other retail outlets in the U.S. in August. <----( Click here to order one. )

THE BEAT GOES ON
The state Supreme Court upheld Washington's ban on gay marriage Wednesday, saying lawmakers have the power to restrict marriage to unions between a man and woman.
The 5-4 decision leaves Massachusetts as the only U.S. state to grant full marriage rights to gay and lesbian couples. It was the latest in a series of significant court rulings favoring gay marriage opponents.
It has occurred to me that many people trying to use the moral issue to justify their position on Gay Marriage or Stem Cells Research seem to be unable to complete their argument from start to finish without tripping all over themselves on either issue.
In the case of Gay Marriage they will frequently resort to saying "why not children", "why not a horse". I think Rick Santorum used a goat as an example. Are they NUTS or just sick?
As you know the failure rate for marriage is about 50 % so I see nothing that is improved by the Defense of Marriage Act.
I've said it before and I'll say it again the impact on me if my neighbor is married and they happen to be Gay is ZERO. I just want them to keep their property up and if they have kids take good care of them.
Now we have the recent veto by Bush on the Stem Cell law. They say that the embryo is a life and it is murder to use it for research. They don't explain the rationale that says they can toss these same embryos in the garbage. Seems to me if it's life, using their argument they need to protect them and who ever toss these thing out has now committed murder.
Oh yea, one last thing. It's OK to BOMB the hell out of people because we want a regime change.

WHAT PART OF BREAKING THE LAW DOESN'T HE GET
Last night I watched a report given by the American Bar Association (ABA). It was given by the ABA, Presidential Signing Statements Task Force.
The Signing Statement is something President Bush has used over 800 times since he's been in office. This is more than all other presidents combined.
So what is a Signing Statement and what does it mean. As far as Bush is concerned it means he is signing this law but there are some parts that he does not agree with and therefore he will not enforce them.
In other words it's a written proclamation that accompanies the signing of a law passed by congress. It's used to announce how the Executive Branch of Government intends to interpret and enforce the new law.
According to the Task Force the President only has two options: sign the law, or veto the law. Anything else he is violating his oath of office to up hold the constitution.
This is scary stuff if the president can pick and choose which law he will follow and which he won't.
THINK ABOUT THAT.

SO PARANOID
Well it seems the Fox News Channel Chairman and CEO Roger Ailes responded Monday to Keith Olbermann's shots at his network's Bill O'Reilly over the weekend.
Olbermann had used a Saturday-morning breakfast session at the Television Critics Association press tour to fire yet another shot at O'Reilly, holding up an O'Reilly mask while raising his right arm in a Nazi salute to mock his on-air rival.
During his "Countdown" show on MSNBC, Olbermann regularly tweaks O'Reilly, whose "The O'Reilly Factor" on Fox is No. 1 in the cable TV news ratings. Olbermann generally runs third in the same time slot.
O'Reilly has referred to Olbermann - although not by name - as a "notorious smear merchant" and pointed out his low ratings.
The fact is they seem so paranoid at FOXNEWS. If you've seen The Factor for any length of time you know the O-MAN attacks almost everyone that doesn't agree with him. For example he has bashed Newspapers (especially the New York Times), Judges, the ACLU, BLOGS, Networks (ABC, NBC, CBS, PBS,CNN, MSNBC), AIR AMERICA. . . should I go on?
Anyway I find it laughable that FOX would even suggest that Olbermann is over the line in light of what O'Reilly does almost nightly.

Now here is a BULLSHIT POLL that only the folks on the right could dream up, in this case it Rush Limbaugh's little brother Sean Hannity. The loud mouth talk show host.
Check out the fine choices for the Rhodes Scholars who take in Hannity's twisted wisdom every day. The closest option to the truth in Hannity's world is evidently the choice that suggests you're a dummy and just didn't know that Republican Senator Rick Santorum had recently made the WMD discovery that shocked. shocked the world -- and all but doomed his failing re-election campaign in Pennsylvania.
As stupid as this POLL is the one thing even more stupid is good old Republican Senator Rick Santorum coming up with this WMD BULLSHIT in the first place. He needs to be voted out of office fast.

POOR LOOSER
It appears that Tim Eyman, the Washington State Initiative garu, has not gathered and submitted enough qualifying signatures. So now after doing this Initiative gathering bit for 9-10 years Eyman is saying the process sucks.
Eyman accused the secretary of state's office of "gross incompetence, purposeful sabotage or blatant dishonesty" because it reported nearly 35,000 fewer signatures than he insists he turned in.
Secretary of State Sam Reed flatly rejected Eyman's barb, saying he resents the insinuation that his agency lost or destroyed thousands of signatures.
Eyman said he has a receipt, stamped by the secretary of state's office, for 300,353 names.
Reed replied that the "receipt" was nothing of the kind, but rather a number written by Eyman on a piece of notepaper and stamped by a receptionist. As for the supposedly missing signatures, "there is no mystery," just the reality that Eyman turned in fewer signatures than he said he did, Reed said.
"We have very tight security and a very strict chain of custody," developed decades ago in conjunction with the State Patrol after some petitions were stolen, he said.
"I have never heard of anyone remotely saying there was a problem, including Tim Eyman in all the times he has come down here," Reed said.
Reed said Eyman can't be counted out, but has significantly fewer signatures than the three other initiatives that will be checked. Those address property rights, the state estate tax and alternative energy.
Handy said Eyman would need the lowest invalidation rate he's ever had with any of his initiatives to qualify, about 15 percent. Eyman's previous initiatives have had invalid signature rates of between 16.7 percent and 23 percent.
It's time for TIM EYMAN to get a real job.

STEM CELLS
I saw this on The Huffington Post. It covers much of what I think about this issue.
This is the first of maybe 5 days of Jon Stewarts take on this issue. The first is below. Also be sure to take the POLL on this subject.
Stem Cell Hypocrisy -- Having It Both Ways Okay, the veto was days ago and I'm a bit slow on the uptake here. But when you have Parkinson's disease, what the press insists on referring to as a "degenerative," "debilitating," "dreaded" illness, you don't like to be tooting a self-serving horn. And who wants to be a what Frank Rich facetiously described as a "pagan narcissist" hopeful for a cure. But, I just need to ask the following: How is it that an embryo cannot be used for research because it is human life and yet it can be discarded? How can President Bush say, on the one hand, that embryos are all potential "snowflake babies" if he is, on the other hand, unwilling to prevent their demise? If an embryo is human life, shouldn't we cease current stem cell research? After all, is an older embryo or one in a specific "line" less of a "person" in waiting than a newer or lucky line embryo? Is an already condemned embryo less deserving of being saved? And, if indeed these little clusters of cells are infinitesimally small human beings, then why are people allowed to create them unless they are willing to use ALL of them? And what's all this tripe about trading one life for another? I don't know anyone with PD, MS, cancer or any disease for that matter who wants to sacrifice a life to prolong his or her own. No thank you. I wouldn't mind a few honest answers, though. If the real reason to block stem cell research is to keep science and medicine from running amuck, then why don't we work on finding a solution to that problem? And I just want to be sure that if the President or someone close to him ever needs stem cells to save his or her life that he's going to refuse. Do you think that's likely? I mean, surely it won't be an issue of who can afford to pay private organizations for treatment. Right? Nah. That's just being cynical. Right?
Remember that there are over 400,000 frozen embroy and only 128 have been turned into the so called "SnowFlake" babies.

The doctor said the chances were 1/1000 so no big deal. . . again if I had those chances of winning the Lotto I would be pretty happy! In this case I was quite worried, but they do these angiograms all the time so the doctor said no worries. . . I did want to know what number they were on. . . like were they on 999 and my Dad was a 1000? Had to get a little humor in you know! But it is hard to not move your neck and my Dad is always moving his head when people talk to him, like most of us do just kinda nod in agreement as a person is talking to you. But the nurses reported back that he did a very good job and they could tell he was really concentrating on not moving his head. Good job dad! The doctor said the results show he is a candidate for stenting. BUT, stenting of the neck is still considered experimental and Medicare (which is what my Dad has) and most insurance companies don’t pay for it. So they need to get him into a study program, this can take up to a month. . . I said we are going on two months now with him trying to get in for heart surgery. . . but it is what it is and they have to go through all the paperwork and channels so he did say he would get working on the paperwork right away and hopefully it will only be a couple of weeks. . . but more likely a month! So we are just in the waiting game now and his next step will be the stenting. We think about a week or two after the stent he should be able to go in for his heart surgery. This angiogram seemed to affect my Dad more then the one he had done on his heart last month, he was much more out of it and slept pretty much most of the night after we got back home, we finally made it back to his home in Bremerton around 8:30pm. I bet my Dad wouldn’t agree with that statement, but when he would wake up for a few minutes his speech was kinda slurred, I was getting scared. . . it was just the drugs warring off though or maybe he didn’t have his teeth in. . .(Kidding Dad) because the next morning he was talking fine. Whew! These small procedures show me he is in for some serious recovery after the actual surgeries and I know it will be hard on him, but one thing about my Dad is he is always in good spirits and has a great sense of humor! More to come. . . Have a great day! Love you all, "Did you hear the post office is thinking about charging a dime just to mail a letter?" This is to see if a Stent can be inserted into my neck artery which is blocked. A stent is a wire mesh tube used to prop open an artery during angioplasty. The stent is collapsed to a small diameter and put over a balloon catheter. It's then moved into the area of the blockage. When the balloon is inflated, the stent expands, locks in place and forms a scaffold. This holds the artery open. The stent stays in the artery permanently, holds it open, improves blood flow to the heart muscle and relieves symptoms (usually chest pain). In my case the brain. This procedure (if I can have it) should improve the risk of open heart surgery to replace my aortic heart valves. "Have you seen the new cars coming out next year? It won't be long before

Yesterday I started talking about the economy using the old Clinton line. . . "It's the economy stupid." Well it's still "The economy stupid". Today, I'm starting a four-part video series. So let's get with it by clicking the link below. Deception part 1 of 4. <----( watch the video here ) The other day I was watching a show on C_SPAN. They were talking about a film that sees war through soldiers' eyes. The film neither romanticizes nor demonizes the war in IRAQ as seen through the eyes of it's three main characters: Specialist Michael Moriarty, Sgt Steven Pink and Sgt Zack Bazzi. The soldiers in the film have families and fears, senses of humor and a capacity for anger. At least one, Spc Moriarty, describes himself as deeply patriotic - but the men are not wide-eyed innocents about their mission in Iraq. They proclaim cynically that the war is about making money for Kellog Brown & Root (KBR), the military contractor which is a subsidiary of a company once run by Vice-President Dick Cheney. Or they say it is about oil - adding that, since the United States needs oil, that is as it should be. Despite the soldiers' grousing about the reasons for the war, the film itself neither supports nor condemns it. That is as director Deborah Scranton wanted it to be - and as the men involved insisted. Go to the link below to see a clip of the film. I've signed up to be notified when the DVD will be available. BE AWARE THEY USE VERY GRAPHIC LANGUAGE. Learn more about this film. <----( click here to go to the site )

Another GREAT SPEECH by President BUSH.<----( watch the video here )
President Bush, who says, ''This economy of ours is strong." By standard measurements, the economy does look good: a 4.6 percent unemployment rate, 5.4 million new jobs since August 2003 and a gross domestic product that grew an average of 4 percent in the past three years. A poll released last month by the Pew Research Center found that just 33 percent of respondents approved of Mr. Bush's handling of the economy, while 54 percent disapproved. . . On Hardball (7/11/06) CHRIS MATTHEWS asked David Gergen: The economy. David-you're up in Harvard. Is this economy doing great or not? GERGEN: Depends on whether you're in the investor class or not, and you know, what you own. This is a great economy in terms of growth. The productivity has been up, the economy has been growing over 3 percent for more than 10 quarters, it's gotten up to the 4 to 5 percent range. By any normal standard, inflation still pretty low, that's a great economy. The problem is this issue of globalization. The globalization in my judgment has been the primary force in suppressing higher wages, higher income for people at the bottom half of the-of America, and that's the reason why you have this great divergence between people who say, "Hey, look, the economy"-if you look at the numbers on the growth side, it looks great, but in terms of my actual life, most people find that their incomes are stagnant and they cannot afford the higher cost of health care and many other-and gasoline and many other things that are coming their way, and that's why they're very unhappy. No one's a bigger insider than Gergen, but he had no trouble understanding why people are down on the economy-despite the selective, feel-good stats which shape the report the president used. Corruption Cited in Iraq's Oil Industry. . .Washington Post U.S. Comptroller General David M. Walker told Congress last week that "massive corruption" and "a lot of theft going on" in Iraq's government-controlled oil industry is hampering the country's ability to govern itself. "It took me about a second and a half to realize that, obviously, there was massive corruption going on, because the numbers just didn't add up," Walker said, referring to a trip he took to Iraq this year in which he was shown figures on oil production and revenue. Walker made his remarks at a House Government Reform subcommittee meeting last Tuesday called to examine implementation of the Bush administration's 2005 "National Strategy for Victory in Iraq." He said one of the failures of the U.S. program was related to the prewar assumption that Iraq would be able to pay for its reconstruction "in large part through oil revenues." The GAO report criticized the administration's strategy for not identifying which U.S. agencies are responsible for implementation, for not integrating U.S. goals and objectives with the Iraqi government and for failing to identify future costs. Boehner Raising More From Lobbyists And Corporate PACs Than DeLay When he was running for Majority Leader, Rep. John Boehner (R-OH) pledged to end the K Street Project for lobbyists and "lead the effort to bring about the kind of reforms the American people are expecting from Congress." But a new review of financial holdings shows Boehner has raised corporate and lobbyist contributions at a faster clip than even corrupt, criminally-indicted former Rep. Tom DeLay: Boehner has been holding fund-raisers at lobbyists' offices, flying to political events on corporate planes and staying at a golf resort with a business group that has a direct stake in issues before Congress. Boehner…has raised campaign contributions at a rate of about $10,000 a day since February, surpassing the pace set by former Representative Tom DeLay after he became majority leader in 2002, a review of federal filings shows. I never trusted this BULLSHIT ARTIST, he's a big-assed crook. The more things change the more they stay the same.

Valerie Plame Wilson and Ambassador Joseph Wilson Initiate a Civil Action Against Vice President Cheney, Karl Rove, and Scooter Libby for Violations of their Constitutional and Other Legal Rights. The suit accuses the defendants of violating the Wilsons' constitutional and other legal rights as a result of "a conspiracy among current and former high-level officials in the White House" to "discredit, punish and seek revenge against" Mr. Wilson for publicly disputing statements made by President Bush in his 2003 State of the Union address justifying the war in Iraq. The suit was filed nearly three years after Washington columnist Robert Novak disclosed Valerie Wilson's classified CIA employment in a column he wrote on July 14, 2003, based on leaks from senior administration officials. It subsequently was confirmed, during Special Counsel Patrick Fitzgerald's criminal investigation, that several top ranking officials in the White House leaked Wilson's name and status with the CIA to Novak and other reporters. Robert Novak, some other commentators and the Administration continue to try to completely distort the role that Valerie Wilson played with respect to Ambassador Wilson's trip to Niger. The facts are beyond dispute. The Office of the Vice President requested that the CIA investigate reports of alleged uranium purchases by Iraq from Niger. The CIA set up a meeting to respond to the Vice President's inquiry. Another CIA official, not Valerie Wilson, suggested to Valerie Wilson's supervisor that the Ambassador attend that meeting. That other CIA official made the recommendation because that official was familiar with the Ambassador's vast experience in Niger and knew of a previous trip to Africa concerning uranium matters that had been undertaken by the Ambassador on behalf of the CIA in 1999. Valerie Wilson's supervisor subsequently asked her to relay a request from him to the Ambassador that he would like the Ambassador to attend the meeting at the CIA. Valerie Wilson did not participate in the meeting.

You've heard president Bush, VP Cheney and Tony Snow all slam the NY TIMES for their story on the SWIFT bank tracing program. Listen to and watch the video below to hear a Hardball segment featuring Ron Suskind. In his new book The One Percent Doctrine Ron lays it all out for you. For further evidence A story from a Miami-based publication, Moneylaundering.com, reveals in detail what we all know: the Bushevik SWIFT international bank tracing program was not really a secret -- and it isn't particularly effective. In short, America has been had again by despicable and unconscionable efforts to intimidate the free press over a program that was probably known to the terrorists before we knew about it. The Bush Administration even bragged about the effort -- in general -- in the past, in one way or another. The last word on this subject. <----( watch the video here ) From what I read there is not much sympathy for Kenny-Boy Lay. I guess if I worked for ENRON and lost everything I'd feel the same way. We went to my Heart Surgeon Dr. King yesterday. As my daughter said the other day in her "guest post" "you have 4 blood vessels going to your brain 2 big ones and 2 small ones. One of the big arteries on your left side is 100% blocked and they can't do anything about that once it goes 100% there is nothing they can do. The other big artery is 50-60% blocked, they could do surgery on that one but it would be more riskier to do the surgery then just leaving it alone and keeping an eye on it at this point." Dr. King wanted to talk to Dr. Berni but he was in surgery. Dr. King thinks using a stent in my neck would improve the risk factor for my heart surgery. So he needs to talk to him before we move forward. Another appointment follows.

What I'm talking about is my neighbors one man fireworks show that he puts on every year. I swear he puts on a show close to the one they do in Seattle only with smaller powered fireworks. As I said yesterday Buddy decided the best solution was to find a soft spot in his pillow and sleep through the whole damn thing. . . he's still sleeping. This was the first year that Billy was part of our family and so I didn't know what he would do. I was sure surprised when at one point when the rockets were going off like crazy Old Bill was out walking around in the backyard. It didn't bother him in the least. Sweet was her scared self. She couldn't get close enough to me. She is funny to watch because during the lull between shots she will stick her head out the back door and look around. She won't go out she'll just look. Then when the fun begins again she's right back at my feet needing some assurance. I haven't gone out yet to check my backyard for spent rockets. If last year is any example (See image) I'll find quite a few.
I went out and picked up the spent rockets and found that I had about the same as last year. It worries me that these rockets make to all parts of my yard. That tells me they can make it to my trees and I have lots of trees in front of my house and all down the left side including a ceder that is 75 to 100 feet tall.
Well today I go in to talk to Dr. King to find out what the next step will be and perhaps setup a scheduled surgery date. Big day today no doubt. "Twist top off with hands. Throw top away. Do not put top in mouth." -- On the label of a bottled drink.
I really don't look forward to the Fourth of July and not because I hate America as some folks like to say. No it's because my dogs get scared with all the fireworks. As luck would have it my next door neighbor is a big fan of fireworks. This is a guess so don't hold me to it, I think he must spend close to $500 bucks or more each year on fireworks. I just need to look out my kitchen window to see the National Fireworks Display right in my neighbors backyard. As a side note I get to spend the next day picking up the spent cartridge in my back yard. But my point is my dogs get really scared with all fireworks going of. I think it's the firecrackers that get's to them the most. Sweet is really the biggest baby. When that first firecracker goes off she is right by my side and needs a good long pat. In a way I like it because it makes me feel closer to my dogs. Buddy on the other hand just goes and gets on his pillow and takes a nice long nap. I think he feels he can sleep longer than their money for fireworks will last. Billy is my new dog and so this is my first 4th with him. I don't know if it will be a big deal for him because he's a good old dog but like me he doesn't hear well.
The other day a study came out saying that The Daily Show was hurting the vote by collage kids. It found that "young people who watch [The Daily Show] develop cynical views about politics and politicians that could lead them to just say no to voting". Are these folks nuts. Not trusting your government is a good thing. . . isn't that why we have a congress. . . well maybe that's a bad analogy. As Liz asks at BlondeSense: "[W]hat is wrong with American citizens being less trustful of their government and political candidates?… What is wrong with questioning our governments policies?" People on the right don't like or get Jon Stewart. Jon Stewart is a satirist, offering up what he calls FAKE NEWS. In contrast to the news media, which often report the latest political spin without so much as an inkling of irony, Stewart educates us all - and not just the collegiate among us - in the ways of politics. For example, while the MSM will report on Cheney's latest remarks on Iraq, and do so virtually context-free, Stewart will juxtapose those remarks with previous, and often contradictory, remarks. If some of Stewart's viewers turn into cynics, laughing at leaders who make fools of themselves, that's only because current political reality itself breeds such cynicism. How is it possible to look at what's going on at both ends of Pennsylvania Avenue and not become something of a cynic? Not voting is a political statement. Voting with knowledge of things as they really are is democratic responsibility. Jon Stewart puts his views on a path to knowledge and responsibility. Think about this. Congress spent the past several weeks talking about Gay marriage and flag burning. Now you know why Jon Stewart is needed. Jon Stewart is good for democracy. Here is Jon's take on this subject. Is he bad for this country. <----( watch the video here )

A man was touring a nursing home with the head administrator, when he asked a question: "What criteria do you use to determine when a person has lost his faculties enough to require institutionalization?" "Well, we have a simple test," said the administrator. "We put them in a room with a bathtub full of water, give them a teaspoon, a teacup, and a bucket, and tell them to empty the tub." I can remember back when I had my first computer, it was a Radio Shack TRS-80 I bought in the late 70's. I still have it, that's a picture I took today of it. It used a "TAPE RECORDER" to store it's data, oh god was it slooooooooooow. I later moved up to 5.24 inch floppy disks (the 3.5 floppy hadn't been invented yet). I can't remember what I paid for two of these guys but I'm sure it was plenty. Everything was expensive back then. . . it was all new. Here's a hint: Don't be the first kid on the block to buy this new stuff. Need proof check the price of the flat panel TV's (and they have dropped over the last 6 to 12 months). A better example is the just released HD DVD player they'll run you about $1000. The disk drive was a great step forward in terms of speed I was very happy now I was building a library of floppy disks. Keeping track of them became a big problem. What I needed was a BIG HARD DISK. As luck would have it they had such a monster and I decided I needed it to help me get organized. I bought my first 10 megabyte Hard disk for $1300. I hadn't read the hint about yet. This was going to get me organized and fast. . . wrong it just made me create more files because now I had easy access to them. Time moved on and so did I into the new world of IBM and Microsoft. Hardware moved on as well and prices at first were expensive but quickly dropped as competition heated up. Today you can buy very large hard drives dirt cheap. For the $1300 I paid for that 10 meg hard drive I can buy 8 or 9 - 180 gigabyte. So Mick what's the point of this stupid rant? The point is that what I've learned is that BIGGER IS NOT ALWAYS BETTER. I have 3 main computers each have at least 180 gigabyte hard drive and one (this one) has two additional external 180 gigabyte hard drives for a total of 540 gb. So my problem today is the same as it was back 20 - 30 years ago lack of organization only now in spades. I can't find anything anymore. HELP!!!

I read in the paper today that OfficeMax is eliminating Mail-In Rebates. I say it's about DAMN TIME. I hate rebates, always have. The only folks that make rebates somewhat reasonable is Costco where you can do it all online. But even that is BULLSHIT. What I think they should do if they are truly giving you a rebate is take off at the register at the time you buy the item. BINGO YOUR DONE. According to the article if rebates are under $50, only one-third of shoppers actually send away for the rebates. If the rebates were from $50 to $100, that figure is 50 percent. The article went on to say this is a growing trend among retailers. I say it's about time.

THIS IS A JOKE. . .RIGHT?
YOU GOTTA HAVE HEART
Hi All,
Well we didn't get a surgery date for my Dad yesterday like we thought we
would. The heart surgeon said he wants my Dad to get a second opinion on
doing his neck surgery. It appears that when Dr King (heart surgeon)
consulted with Dr Berni (neck surgeon) they had a difference of opinions
because Dr Berni originally told us two weeks ago that he didn't want to do
neck surgery on my Dad because it was TOO risky, so then the following
week we went in to see Dr King and he said well if neck surgery is too risky
what do you think the heart surgery is???
The blockage in my Dad's neck increases his risk of having a stroke by 10
times the normal risk. . .so Dr King REALLY wants my Dad to get something
done with the neck blockage before his heart surgery. Dr King suggested
that my Dad have a stent put in his neck instead of the surgery that Dr
Berni was going to do which would have been like a bypass in his neck and
they would have had to drill a hole in my Dad's head…Ouch!
The problem now is that Dr Berni doesn't do stents. . .but they will be doing
them over in Bremerton in the next few months. . .so when Dr King suggested
this to Dr Berni, I think it is more of a political deal that Dr Berni doesn't
want to have to send my Dad somewhere else as if they can't take care of
him over in Bremerton. . .and so he just suggested to Dr King to do the heart
surgery the old fashioned way before they did stents and just do the heart
surgery and roll the dice with the risks. . .Thanks!
Thankfully Dr King doesn't want to be old school and so now they are going
to send my Dad to Overlake or Swedish to get a second opinion on getting a
stent in his neck. I just hope we can get this figured out before my Dad's
aortic valve decreases another point!
I should find out today where they want him to go. . .if anyone knows of a
Top Notch Vascular surgeon in the area please pass along his/her name.
More to come. . .

CONGRESS JUST DOESN'T GET IT
Farm Program Pays $1.3 Billion to People Who Don't Farm
Even though Donald R. Matthews put his sprawling new residence in the
heart of rice country, he is no farmer. He is a 67-year-old asphalt
contractor who wanted to build a dream house for his wife of 40 years.
Yet under a federal agriculture program approved by Congress, his 18-acre
suburban lot receives about $1,300 in annual "direct payments," because
years ago the land was used to grow rice.
Matthews is not alone. Nationwide, the federal government has paid at least
$1.3 billion in subsidies for rice and other crops since 2000 to individuals
who do no farming at all, according to an analysis of government records by
The Washington Post.
Some of them collect hundreds of thousands of dollars without planting a
seed. Mary Anna Hudson, 87, from the River Oaks neighborhood in Houston,
has received $191,000 over the past decade. For Houston surgeon Jimmy
Frank Howell, the total was $490,709.
"I don't agree with the government's policy," said Matthews, who wanted to
give the money back but was told it would just go to other landowners. "They
give all of this money to landowners who don't even farm, while real farmers
can't afford to get started. It's wrong."

KEN LAY DUCKS BIG HOUSE
Ah, Kenneth Lay of Enron: America hardly knew you before your trial, but
learned after your big-hammer jury conviction that you had left countless
suckers broke, employees cheated and stockholders betrayed.
There were also the electricity customers swindled, along the lines of Mr.
and Mrs. Front Porch USA, who wanted to leave a night light on without
sending Enron their whole Social Security checks for the privilege.
Many people had looked forward to knowing more about Ken Lay, especially
how he liked prison.
